‘The sardana: how to dance it’.

The Society for International Folk Dancing have just published a book by Brian Bishop, in English, on the Catalan dance, the sardana, entitled ‘The sardana: how to dance it’.

The Sardana: How to dance itThe book covers the background of this beautiful dance, its music, etiquette and rules, as well as providing copious instructions and illustrations on how it is danced. Three methods are included to help with working out the distribution of step sequences for any sardana music, to ensure the dance is always ended in the correct way. Many recommended web site references are added to enhance the value of the book. Altogether it is a most thorough exploration of the dance.

In the 1960’s and 70’s Brian regularly took parties of adult students to Barcelona University. There, in the capital of Catalonia, he soon fell in with the locals who were giving classes in the sardana to their foreign guests. He became hooked and became prominent in sardana circles, even appearing on the local television. He made life-long friends with some of the teachers, whose help has been enlisted to ensure the accuracy of this book. Brian and the S.I.F.D. hope that many English-speakers will become similarly enthused and come to love this stately national dance.

The book costs £10, plus postage and packing (see HERE for costs)
