Compulsory registration for rental properties in France

Since the beginning of July 2010, it has been compulsory for second home and gite owners to register their properties with their local town hall or risk a fine of up to €450.

Anyone renting out furnished holiday accommodation should fill in the simple two page form (Cerfa 14004-01) available at and returnable to, the Mairie, and should receive an acknowledgement within a few days, (depending of course on the efficiency of the commune!) signed and stamped. And that should be it!

The ‘taxe de sejour’ local tax set by some communes and which should be paid per visitor per night for rental properties , should continue to be paid as normal. However, many gite owners have not been paying this, and were in fact unaware of its existence, as it was a difficult tax to control and checks were rare. This was expected to change with the new compulsory registration (Don’t know if it has!) but the tax is small, varying from 0,20 € à 1,50 € per person per night depending on the commune.
