In 1916 following the battle of the Somme an organization was formed with the aim of fostering friendship and cultural links between the citizens of France and Great Britain.
In the UK AFGB has been running continuously since then, but in France it was disbanded between 1940 and 1944 in order to prevent membership lists and addresses (particularly of Jewish members) from being accessed by the occupying German forces.
2016 is therefore the centenary of the association which now has 35 branches in France, including one in Perpignan.
This was started in 1981 by Georgette Draper, who is the current Honorary President.
AFGB Perpignan has a membership of around 50 comprising both French and British residents of the PO. It is a friendly group of people who enjoy meeting and socializing in French and English, although it is not necessary to be proficient in both languages.
Regular meetings include:

Meeting for an apero once a month in the Café de la Paix in Perpignan

Attendance at lunchtime sandwich concerts at the Théâtre Archipel

Visits to the Cinéma Castillet (films in original language)
There is also a full programme of outings and visits organized, which has recently included:

Lunch in Thuir followed by a guided visit of the Byrrh caves

A medieval banquet and tour of the chateau at Villerouges Termenes

A Christmas lunch followed by a quiz on French and British life, and singing of French and British carols.

In April the AGM was held at Chateau Rombeau, Rivesaltes, followed by a tour of the vineyard and lunch in the restaurant.
AFGB warmly welcomes new members, both French and British who would enjoy meeting and socializing with a friendly group of mixed nationality.
