The government of the Province of Catalonia has commenced plans to build 6 new prisons over the next five years, the first one expected to open this November in Sant Joan de Vilatorrada, central Catalonia, followed by a further three, one of which will receive prisoners in Figueres, at the beginning of 2011. These new prisons will conform to new standards, as expected and required, nay, demanded, by the modern criminal of today, and architects have been briefed to incorporate a pleasing visual interior for the prisoners, along with sports facilities, pool, and tree lined walkway along side the 64 cells, which will be in 8 independent units, with patio, each with sport facilities (gym etc) hairdresser, canteen and library. The philosophy behind this is to rehabilitate prisoners according to personalised programmes, tailor made for drug addicts, sexual predators…..
