With another heatwave (canicule)  predicted this week, water restrictions have now been issued for more than 70 departments in France, including the Pyrenees-Orientales and it is likely that those figures will rise. Up north in the capital, there has been no rainfall since June 21, the longest period that Paris has gone with rain since 1873, according to Météo-France.

With consumption rising and resources falling, pollution of our water could become a real problem in the future. Low ground water levels and lower than usual rainfall since last September are cited as the cause for the latest restrictions.

The ban on water usage varies from department to department but in general, there are restrictions on…

…. the use of water for leisure activities eg filling up swimming pools, although the ‘mise à niveau’ –           small  top ups – is acceptable.
…. washing your car other than in commercial car washes, which may still be used if open.
…..watering lawns

Vegetable gardens may  only be watered before 8h and after 20h

Failure to respect these restrictions could result in a fine of several thousand euros. Spot checks could be carried out.
