DESCRIPTION:Bear Festival and Carnival\nWhere and when?\nBear Festivals take place each year in late winter (usually February) in several villages of the Vallespir\, notably Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans\, Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste and Arles-sur-Tech\, each with its own variations. The festivals  are officially recognised as part of France’s  cultural heritage\, underlining their cultural importance. \nArles-sur-Tech – Sunday 1st February 2026\n\nThe Story\nThe Bear Festival of Arles sur Tech is performed as a lively piece of street theatre\, drawing villagers and visitors alike into an age-old Catalan tradition. The story tells of the impossible love between the beautiful Roseta and a wild bear from the forest. Symbolically captured by the trapper\, the bear is paraded through the village\, his strength tested by Bottes et les Tortuges\, before the ritual shaving marks his transformation from beast to man. \n \nUsual Programme\n(Times may vary slightly from year to year – check with local tourist office) \nSunday \n9.30am – Hunters’ breakfast\, Salle des Fêtes\n10.30am – Trobada dels Caçaires\, de la Roseta et du Trappeur – procession through the streets\n11am – Opening ceremony La Patte de l’Ours\, Placette d’Amunt\n11.30am – Sardanes with cobla Les Casenoves\, Placette d’Amunt\n12.30pm – Hunters’ lunch\, Placette d’Amunt\n3pm – The Bear Hunt\, departing from the Fontaine des Buis\n4.30pm – Final shaving of the bear and sardanes with La Cobla Principal del Rosselló\, Place de l’ÉgliseTraditional Catalan bands\, known as coblas\, with specific instruments\, will accompany the festival throughout. \nLa Chanson de l’Ours\n(Words added in 1950 by Charles Trenet) \nA humorous and satirical song recounting the capture\, taming and surprising civic usefulness of a once-feared village bear. \nLa chanson de l’ours\n(words added in 1950 by Charles Trenet) \nDans notre village autrefois\nUn ours énorme dévastait les bois\nIl faisait peur au bucheron\nEt du berger mangeait tous les moutons Le maire et monsieur le curé\nDirent en colère “cela ne peut durer\nCet ours nous enlève tout repos\nAvant huit jours\, il faut avoir On partit donc de bon matin\nDans la foret qui sentait bon le pin\nAvec des piques des flambeaux\nCar ce jour-là il ne faisait pas beau\nNous avons marché tour le jour\nEt malgré ça nous n’avons pas vu d’ours\nPourtant à la tombée de la nuit\nDans un sentier on voit un oeil qui luit Et pan!
