SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: JUNE 2024
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\n\nPeople are expecting miracles with the weather! It’s not yet June so please welcome the rain. Our Mairie has quite clearly stated that W A T E R is going to be made available —- but to whom? I’d like to hope that we will be able to top up our pool but I’m not banking on it. Our summer visitors will be disappointed – again. Those big ugly plastic water butts are looking more and more likely – a no brainer really. We need to be more water aware. \nBut isn’t everything green and lush. The other day we drove through Le Barcarès and Canet – there were lots of proudly upstanding bamboo hedges. The fields are full of wild flowers\, purple mallow and thistles\, and those red poppies with their paper thin petals are popping up everywhere. Tarmac or railway tracks – nature pushes past all the barriers. Drought – what drought? A joy to behold! \nSpeaking of which\, the Olympic Torch passed through the P-O on its way to Paris – what? didn’t you know…oh well \n\nAt our CSF Spring Open Meeting on 7th May\, we were able to have our pre lunch Sangria on the terrace at Le Restaurant Guy Molas. \nWe had a very interesting meeting in the morning. First we heard some CSF news from Jill and Penny and then Fred Browne talked about his work as a forensic psychiatrist in Northern Ireland. \nForensic psychiatry deals mainly with mentally disordered offenders who have come through the judicial system and who need assessment and treatment in order to be rehabilitated back into the community. He gave us lots of detail about the methods he used to probe the minds of these offenders\, studying their biological backgrounds\, listening and questioning and gathering information. \nAs you can imagine\, there were lots of questions at the end of his talk and there were further questions over lunch\, for those lucky enough to be on his table! \n\nMonday 20 May was the Pentecôte Holiday and an occasion for the village of Oms to celebrate their 15th Fête du Printemps. \nAfter a week or so of very welcome Spring showers\, the sun was back for at least the morning. Around 160 people enjoyed a wide variety of activities and entertainments. \nOutside there were guided hikes\, a farmer’s market\, plus games\, face painting and donkey rides for the children. \nLunch was accompanied by music provided by an accordionist and a magician entertained and mystified. \nInside the spacious village hall was a varied exhibition with a theme of Le Canigou\, the mystic mountain of Catalonia. There were local arts and crafts and our own Penny Parkinson manned the CSF information point. \n\n\nDrop Ins\n\n\nWednesday 5 June\, Pablo’s Bar\, Céret\, 10.30 \n\nCome along for coffee and chat.  There will also be books and Céret is a great place to meet up with friends.\n\nMonday 17 June\, Café des Artistes\, Laroque des Albères\, 10.15 \nCome and have a browse through our large selection of paperbacks. Any books you bring along for exchange will be gratefully received. We can’t take hardbacks or non-fiction books I’m afraid. Bring a friend and stay for coffee.\nWednesday 19 June\, Villa Lafabrègue\, Prades\, 10.15 \nThere will be coffee and cake at this lovely villa and this month Greg Jemison will give us a presentation about the Yemen.\n\nLooking ahead\nOctober Rose – Les Jeudis Roses de la Clinique 2024\n4 Thursdays of talks\, workshops and conferences about breast cancer\nOct 3\, 10\, 17 & 24 : 11am – 4pm \n🎗 To support Pink October\, the SOA (Soins d’Onco-Accompagnement) joins with PINK THURSDAYS in Perpignan at the Clinique St Pierre.\nSOA 66\, based in Perpignan\, offers support to people with cancer throughout the Pyrénées-Orientales. It gives supportive care to patients being treated in Oncology and/or Hematology in the form of alternative\, complementary care\, as well as financial support. The objective is to inform patients\, health professionals and visitors of the actions proposed by the association. \nCSF will have a stand and we’ll be handing out leaflets and chatting mostly to medical people\, letting them know what CSF is about and how we can help English speaking patients. (There will be no stands on 30 October.) \nA detailed programme will be available later on in the year but for the moment\nif anyone can do an hour or two in the morning or afternoon\, we’d very much appreciate it. Please contact Phil O’Neill philomeneoneill@gmail.com \nSaturday 5 October\, Fête October Rose\, 12pm \nOur Autumn event this year will be a LUNCH AT THE DOMAINE MAS ALART. This vineyard\, set in the heart of the Roussillon plain\, has been there since 1897. \nAs you know\, the Octobre Rose campaign makes it possible to raise awareness and inform and encourage screening in the fight against breast cancer. \nAs our event takes place at this particular time of year\, we thought it would be appropriate to name it Fête October Rose. \nThe afternoon will begin with a fizzy apéro and continue with lunch and then dessert. Wine will be served of course and there will be music from our friends Zircon. Dancing will be encouraged. There will be prizes to be won – a tombola* and a surprise draw. Fun for everyone. \nEntrance by ticket only and the cost is 20€. Watch this space for more details and please make a note of the date. \n*TOMBOLA PRIZES\nOur Tombola table is always a great way of raising a bit of money. And remember\, the proceeds are shared equally with La Ligue. \nTake a chance\, buy a raffle ticket and win a prize – it could be a bottle of shampoo\, it could be a bottle of champagne. It could be a gift box of perfume or soap\, or a couple of ceramic bowls. All these are donated items and we are asking you\, if you can\, to please donate – bottles of wine or water\, jam or beer\, unwanted gifts or anything you think you yourself might like to win! Your donations will be gratefully received at any of our upcoming events\, including Drop Ins\, or just email me and I will arrange pick up. Thank you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease remember that if anyone is struggling or needing help\, the CSF telephone and email helplines are always open.   We are there for everyone needing assistance at this time as well as for those affected by cancer. There is also lots of information on our website.\n\n\n\n\nDiana Eastaff \nShare this:\n Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Click to share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n\n	Related\n
