SUMMARY:Be my Valentine - All’s fair in love and war
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nBe my Valentine – All’s fair in love and war\nRoman Emperor Claudius II wasn’t against a bit of love in the ranks\, but actual marriage was forbidden in his army\, as he believed that married men did not make good soldiers. \nAlong came Saint Valentine\, patron saint of lovers\, but also of bee keepers\, plague victims and epilepsy sufferers! (It’s a hard job but somebody has to do it!) \n \nAnyway\, according to legend\, our Val\, worried that soldiers would nevertheless abuse their Christianity by indulging in the sin of extra marital nooky\, performed secret wedding ceremonies to encourage them to remain faithful Christians. \nCaught out by Claudius\, he was imprisoned and later beheaded for his sins on February 14\, 270 AD. \nSome say that the first Valentine’s day card was sent by Saint Valentine himself from his prison cell\, a letter of love to his jailor’s daughter\, signed ‘From your Valentine’. \nIn fact\, the oldest existing Valentine card recorded was written in 1415 to his wife\, by Charles\, Duke of Orléans\, also from a prison cell. Just 21 years old\, the French nobleman was captured at the Battle of Agincourt\, during the Hundred Years War\, and imprisoned in the Tower of London. \n \nHere it is\, its ‘olde worlde’ spelling adapted for the modern reader: \n\n\n\n\nJe suis déjà d’amour tanné\,\nMa très douce Valentinée\,\nCar pour moi fûtes trop tard née\,\nEt moi pour vous fus trop tôt né.\nDieu lui pardonne qui estrené\nM’a de vous\, pour toute l’année \nJe suis déjà\, etc.\nMa très douce\, etc. \nBien m’étais suspeçonné\,\nQu’aurais telle destinée\,\nAinsi que passât ceste journée\,\nCombien qu’Amours l’eût ordonné. \nJe suis déjà\, etc. \n(I am already sick with love\,\nMy very gentle Valentine\,\nSince for me you were born too soon\,\nAnd I for you was born too late.\nGod forgives him who has estranged\nMe from you for the whole year. \nI am already sick with love\,\nMy very gentle Valentine. \nWell might I have suspected\nThat such a destiny\,\nThus would have happened this day\,\nHow much that Love would have commanded. \nI am already sick with love\,\nMy very gentle Valentine.) \n \nOf course\, sceptics may say that the Valentine’s card was invented by the greetings card industry! \nDID YOU KNOW…..\n…..that there is a little village called Saint Valentin in Indre\, in the Val de Loire? \n \nThis otherwise unremarkable village markets itself as ‘le village des amoureux’\, and between the Jardin des Amoureux\, le Saule aux Coeurs\, and the Maison des Amoureux\, love struck couples are spoilt for choice. Visit the annual festival of love around St. Valentine’s Day\, renew your vows in the church\, attach your names to the tree of eternal hearts or sip champagne in the lovers’ gazebo. Love is indeed a many splendoured thing. \nMessages for Your Valentine Card\nJe voudrais être une larme\nPour naître dans tes yeux\nVivre sur tes joues\nEt mourir sur tes lèvres \nJe t’aime un peu\, beaucoup\, passionnément\, à la folie \nFIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FRENCH LANGUAGE OF LOVE \nShare this:\n Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Click to share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n\n	Related\n
