SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2019
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHello Everyone\n\nAround this time of year I do a certain amount of sun-chasing in order to get the washing dry and the suntan topped up before sunset casts its rosy glow around 8.30!  We cheer when the sun shines and moan about the lack of rain. \nWhen you live here all year round\, cottage gardens and pristine lawns are strictly things of the past (and Gardeners World).  We have to make do with bushy basil\, bougainvillea which defies gravity and a fruit bowl which would keep a still life artist busy for the whole of autumn. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nTHIS MONTH’S DROP-INS:\nThere won’t be a Drop In in Céret this month as our Activity for Life is taking place the next day in Maureillas.  See below for details. \nMonday 16th September- Laroque des Albères – 10.30am – 12pm\nCome along to the Café des Artistes and have a browse\, buy a coffee and take two books.  We have a large turnover of books and DVDs and we encourage you to bring as many paperbacks as you can carry but please don’t bring hardbacks or text books. \nThursday 18th September – Ille sur Têt – 10.30am – 12pm\nAt Lizzie’s Kitchen this month our friend Rosemary Humphries will talk about America where she lived and worked for 30 years.  Coffee and cake will be served as usual. \nTickets for the Autumn Ball will be on sale at both venues.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nThe Chris Dowd Triple Cycle Challenge\nChris Dowd is a remarkable gentleman who is undertaking several challenges to raise money for Cancer Support France. \nEarlier this year\, Chris committed himself to raise €1500 for CSF in memory of a friend who had benefited from CSF support.  At the end of this challenge he aims to have cycled 15\,000 kms in total. \nIn June he completed the Ardechoise Endurance Cycle Ride\, a grueling ride with many tough climbs. He cycled 640 kms in 4 days having climbed 10\,500m. \nHe is now well on his way to his 15\,000 kms.  To top it off\, he will cycle from the Eiffel Tower to the Col du Tourmalet near the Pic du Midi du Bigoree in the Pyrénées\, which is an amazing 1200 kms!  He sets off from Paris on Friday 30th August at 3pm! \nIf you would like to support Chris or find out a bit more about him then have a look at his Alvarum page here (click on the “à suivre” for his blog): http://www.alvarum.com/chrisdowd[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nActivity for Life – Thursday 5th September\nRegistration for this year’s walks and pétanque are now well under way.  If you haven’t yet booked your place then a brief reminder – there will be two walks\, the longer walk climbs gently through wooded countryside.  It starts at 9.30am and is 11.5km\, taking about 3 hours.  The shorter walk is on mainly flat ground. It starts at 10.30 and is 5km\, taking just over an hour. \nFor those less energetic\, a leisurely game or two of pétanque will start around 11am with the incentive of a bottle of wine for the winners. There will also be stalls with quiche and cakes\, books\, CSF bric-a-brac and products\, a licensed bar for beers and wine plus tea\, coffee and soft drinks available from 9am. \nStay for lunch\, feel free to bring a picnic and something to cook on our barbecue (there will be a fridge to keep stuff cool).  And this year we will have a lunch plate on offer at €10 of quiche\, BBQ sausages and cake with  a drink. \nLunch promises a most enjoyable ambiance with the Gospels de Maureillas singing for us from around 12.30pm\, followed by “2 Partout”  with Maurice (saxophones) and Rosie (keyboards) playing their brand of jazz with world-music flavours. \nDo contact Penny for more information\, for registration or if you would like to help on the day\, sud-penny@cancersupportfrance.org[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nBien-être Day – Saturday 14 September\nAs the title suggests\, there are all sorts of healthy activities to enjoy at this day out set in the gardens of Les Marguerites\, a manor house in Alet-les-Bains in the Aude.  Therapies & experiences\, workshops\, a tasty buffet lunch and a bit of entertainment. \nLots more information here: https://sud-de-france.cancersupportfrance.org/living-well-bien-être-day[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nLOOKING AHEAD\nSaturday 12th October AUTUMN BALL Bages 7pm – Midnight\nTICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE FOR THE AUTUMN BALL! \nTickets must be bought beforehand. If you can’t get to any of our Drop Ins\, then please contact me if you would like tickets. \nWe know that we can count on your support at what is always a very relaxing evening\, sitting with friends\, joining in the fun and winning some prizes. Out of the money we raise at this event\, we split what we make on the Tombola with La Ligue contre le cancer.  If you want to come with a group of friends\, we can certainly try and reserve a table for you\, as long as you let us know in advance. \nThere’ll be prizes and bottles to be won\, an Auction of Promises when you can bid for fine wines\, a fish & chip supper\, a 7-day stay in Edinburgh\, a motor-boat trip\, a hand drawn and painted portrait of your dog and lots more.  Music from our old friends Zircon and dancing too. \n€15 will buy you a tapas meal plus dessert and a glass of wine. There will be a bar selling beer\, wine and soft drinks. \nWe’d be very grateful for donations to our tombola. Bottles can be filled with anything – wine\, water\, shampoo\, tomato ketchup – plastic or glass. For the other prizes we are looking for unopened gifts or unused knick-knacks e.g. household items\, jewellery\, china\, scarves\, soaps\, perfumes\, etc.  Just bring your donation along to one of the Drop Ins or drop me a line and we can arrange a pick up. \n\nSaturday 9th November Quiz Night Eus 7pm\nThe Quiz Night in Eus is at the Maison de Temps Libre.  There will be tables of four or six teams and each team competes to win a prize by answering general knowledge questions. There will be a simple finger food buffet plus wine and a chance to win a bottle or two on the Bottle Tombola. \nThe money raised will go to a charity called Les Blouses Roses. These people are volunteers who go into hospitals and chat to the elderly and run workshops for children. There are 116 branches in France. \nTickets are €10 and they are available now. Please contact Maggie (maggie.longworth@gmail.com) or Ginny (ginnymartin@hotmail.co.uk). \n\nSunday 17th November Rifle Pour La Vie Collioure 3pm\nEvery year La Ligue contre le Cancer organises a rifle at the Centre Culturel in Collioure.  The prizes are original and varied and include works of art by local artists and sculptors\, produce and services offered by artisans\, local shops\, restaurants and winemakers.  The money raised will go to La Ligue. \nDiana Eastaff\n[/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=”” style=”flat” css=”.vc_custom_1567169370488{background-color: #abc3d8 !important;}”]Are you interested in finding out more about what CSF does?  If so please email Penny (sud-president@cancersupportfrance.org) \nPlease pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested in any of these events and for further information please contact me by e-mail on deastaff@yahoo.co.uk or by phone 04 68 82 90 49. \nAnd check out our website at csf-suddefrance.webs.com for all our future events[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n
