SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: DECEMBER 2019
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHello Everyone\n\nUp and out on a deserted road early Sunday morning\, I caught the spectacular sight of the sun creeping up behind Canigou.  Nestling on the horizon\, a snowy mound was all lit up and gleaming\, a thousand times more dazzling than her mighty neighbour. \nSpread out in front of me was an autumn canvas of vineyards\, fruit trees and the criss-crossing lines of planes and poplars.  Rummage around in a box of paints and you’d be hard pushed to find something that matched the yellows\, the oranges\, the reds and the faded greens. \nBanish the crush of the Christmas rush and get out there – preferably early on a Sunday morning. \n\n\nEus Quiz Night \nAt the Quiz Night in Eus on November 9th we had a full house.  Questions in both French and English were given by Jan West and her husband Ray adjudicated.  It was a lively and exciting evening.  We made around €755 and half of the tombola stall proceeds (€161) went to Les Blouses Roses. \nA huge thank you must go to Jan and Ray and also to Lizzie who provided the food and to Claude who helped and of course to those who worked behind the scenes to make this evening such a success. \n\nRifle \nThere were around 200 people at the La Ligue‘s Rifle Pour La Vie in Collioure on November 17th.  It was very well organised.  There was a large screen showing the numbers as they were called which was particularly helpful for the hard of hearing and those unsure of their French. \nThey raised about €4\,000.  Incidentally\, there were just two of us from CSF which was a pity because it was an entertaining evening and a table of 5\, 8 or 10 of us would have had a great time.  Still\, perhaps next year. \n\nChristmas Market\n \nCSF had a couple of tables at the Christmas Market in St Jean Pla de Corts on November 24th.  Our tombola table was strategically positioned just by the front entrance so the impressive array of prizes attracted quite a few people.  We took €240\, of which half goes to La Ligue. \nOur books\, cards and merchandise sold well\, giving us around €520.  Thank you to all those who helped.  I’d also like to say how grateful we are to all of you who came and supported us. \n\nEvents \nAll our events\, some of which come up year after year\, are held not just to raise a bit of money and wave the CSF flag\, they are also opportunities when we can meet and have fun.  We never under-estimate the commitment of our members and supporters.  We’ve come to rely on you in fact.  You turn up\, participate or come and watch\, you spread the word or you just pop in from time to time. \nPerhaps some of you are not fully aware of the whole CSF package.  Have a look at our website or Facebook sometime. See how much your support matters and take inspiration from some of the personal stories. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nTHIS MONTH’S DROP-INS:\nChristmas Cards are now available at all the Drop In venues! \nWednesday 4th December – Céret – 10.30am – 12pm\n \nPablo’s Bar in the Place Pablo Picasso.   Come and join us for coffee and conversation.  There are books and DVDs. \nMonday 16th December – Laroque des Albères – 10.30am – 12pm\n \nCome along to the Café des Artistes and have a browse\, buy a coffee and take two books.  We have a large turnover of books and DVDs and we encourage you to bring as many paperbacks as you can carry but please don’t bring hardbacks or text books.  If you need to park your car close by\, someone will come and help you carry the books to the café. \nThursday 18th December- Ille sur Têt – 10.30am – 12pm\n \nThere’ll be coffee and cake at Lizzie’s as usual.  Perhaps even a mince pie or two.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nLOOKING AHEAD\nWednesday 29th January AGM CSF Sud\nOur own AGM will be in Carcassonne again next year.  It will be held\, as before\, at the Restaurant L’Oliveraie\, 850 Boulevard Denis Papin\, 11000 Carcassonne (just off the A61). There will be a meeting followed by lunch. \nThe meeting will include a talk from Martin Christlieb from the Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford.  Some of you will remember him.  He has spoken to us on two different occasions over the past 4 years.  Intriguingly\, his title is Public Engagement Manager and if you’d like to find out more have a look at this . \nIt’s worth mentioning at this early stage\, if anyone would like to car share\, please let me know and arrangements will be made.  There will be more details next month. \n\nSaturday 7th March Vins des Femmes\nThe Domaine Sanac Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines is organising a wine tasting at the Chateau de L’Ou in Montescot.  If you’re wondering how it got its name\, you can find out here. You’ll also find some more interesting facts about this domaine and its wine producers. \nAt the wine tasting we hope to have 12 wine producers. There’ll be music and a local artist will be doing something creative.  It sounds like a chance to come and try some new wines. \nMore details later but please put this date in your diary. \n\nWednesday 15th April CSF Open Meeting Perpignan\nPlease make a note of this date because you won’t want to miss our annual Open Meeting.  It’s very informal.  For the uninitiated it’s a chance to find out more about CSF and chat with friends over a really good lunch. \nAs always it will be held at the Hotel Le Mas des Arcades in the Porte d’Espagne area of Perpignan\, a venue which is convenient for everyone. \nWe gather for morning coffee and the meeting starts with a short update of CSF business.  It will be followed by a talk from our guest speaker.  This time we are fortunate to have with us Doctor Nicolas Van Oudenhove who is the Head of Palliative Care at Perpignan Hospital where he works with cancer patients. \nThe meeting will finish with a three-course lunch.  I will be sending out a menu next month. \nI know it’s a bit early but do let me know if you would like to come.  Open means open – everyone is welcome including family and friends. \n\nWednesday 3rd – Sunday 7th June Cycle for Life\nAll we know at the moment is that this will be from Rochefort to Thiviers in the Charente/Charente Maritime area.  Penny will have more details on this in a week or so.  sud-penny@cancersupportfrance.org \nFind out about last year’s event here. \n\nSunday 7th June Vide Grenier Saint Cyprien\nThis is a large Vide Grenier\, organised by La Ligue\, which is held every year at this time.  We normally have a couple tables and it’s very well-attended. \nDiana Eastaff\n[/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=”” style=”flat” css=”.vc_custom_1567169370488{background-color: #abc3d8 !important;}”]Are you interested in finding out more about what CSF does?  If so please email Penny (sud-president@cancersupportfrance.org) \nPlease pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested in any of these events and for further information please contact me by e-mail on deastaff@yahoo.co.uk or by phone 04 68 82 90 49. \nAnd check out our website at csf-suddefrance.webs.com for all our future events[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n

SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: JANUARY 2020
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHello Everyone\n\nWaking up at six in the morning in a house somewhere between the Surrey Hills and the South Downs\, pitch dark outside\, I could hear birdsong.  Later\, as I trudged along a country road towards an English pub on a village green\, on a Christmas morning\, I felt a tug at my heart strings.  A white wine spritzer never tasted as good as it did then. The beery smell and the blazing fire and the comforting sound of other people’s conversations.  Good old Blighty!  \n\n\nWe didn’t do presents this year but coming home after 10 days away was a gift in itself.  The sun still shines\, the sky is still blue and the bare branches have never looked so good.  There were even a couple of purple irises poking their heads out to greet me. \n\n\nHere’s something really uplifting for the start of a new year.   \n\nNew Year Honour for French cancer carer\nA volunteer with a charity that helps English-speaking cancer patients and their friends and families throughout France has been awarded the British Empire Medal Award in the New Year Honours List.\nCatherine Hartley was nominated for the award by fellow volunteers and clients and their families from Cancer Support France Languedoc (CSFL)\, as well as a senior oncologist at the Institut du Cancer de Montpellier Hospital.\n\nPlease click here to read the article in full.\n\n****************************************************************************************************************************************\nHELP! \nCSF is looking for somewhere secure and watertight to store the books for its monthly book exchange at the Café des Artistes in Laroque.  We usually have around 10 supermarket size bags of books and a few boxes of DVDs.  Access would be needed every third Monday of the month to collect the books at around 10am and return them around 12.30pm. \n\nIf you know of anywhere or know anyone who may be able to help\, then PLEASE contact me.  \n****************************************************************************************************************************************\nThere is only one Drop-In this month:\n\nWednesday 15 January Ille-sur-Têt 10.30-12 \n\nLizzie is opening her kitchen again this month.  Please come and see us.  There’ll be coffee and cakes as usual. \n\n\n\nFriday 24 January FORWARD PLANNING MEETING 2pm\n\nThis is a bit of a brainstorming meeting which will be at Miranda’s house\, 29 Rue Pasteur\, 66670 Bages.   Members are invited to come along and talk about CSF events for the coming year.  One of the things we will be talking about is an event we’re calling Living Well after Cancer.  We need to find a venue for this.  Put your thinking caps on and bring some ideas to the table or just come and join in the discussion – all input is important. \n\n\nIf you would like to be part of our forward planning\, can you please let me know as soon as possible.  If you have some ideas but you can’t make the meeting\, please email them to Maggie: Sud-po@cancersupportfrance.org \n\n\n\nWednesday 29 January AGM CSF Sud 9.45am\n\nOur own AGM will be in Carcassonne again this year.  It will be held\, as before\, at the Restaurant L’Oliveraie\, 850 Boulevard Denis Papin\, 11000 Carcassonne (just off the A61).\nwww.loliveraie.fr\n\nOur speaker will be Dr Martin Christlieb\, from the Department of Oncology at Oxford University. The subject of his talk will be on clinical trials of new treatments and how to measure their effectiveness.   Martin has spoken to us on two different occasions over the past 4 years.  Intriguingly\, his title is Public Engagement Manager and if you’d like to find out more have a look at this:   (this is a different link to the one in last month’s letter)\n\nThe cost of the lunch will be 20€ – please reply with a cheque and your menu choices before  MONDAY 20th JANUARY 2020.  (If you would like to pay electronically please contact Hazel: hazelturner10@gmail.com)\n\n\nPlease note that travel expenses are not paid for attending the AGM.   Car sharing is easy to arrange.  Just let me know as soon as possible. \n\n\nLOOKING AHEAD\nSaturday 7 March « Vin des Femmes » From 5pm\nThe Domaine Sanac Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines is organising a wine tasting at the Chateau de L’Ou in Montescot.  \n\nYou can click on this link to find out more about the domaine\n\n\nAt the wine tasting we hope to have 12 wine producers.
