SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: DECEMBER 2019
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHello Everyone\n\nUp and out on a deserted road early Sunday morning\, I caught the spectacular sight of the sun creeping up behind Canigou.  Nestling on the horizon\, a snowy mound was all lit up and gleaming\, a thousand times more dazzling than her mighty neighbour. \nSpread out in front of me was an autumn canvas of vineyards\, fruit trees and the criss-crossing lines of planes and poplars.  Rummage around in a box of paints and you’d be hard pushed to find something that matched the yellows\, the oranges\, the reds and the faded greens. \nBanish the crush of the Christmas rush and get out there – preferably early on a Sunday morning. \n\n\nEus Quiz Night \nAt the Quiz Night in Eus on November 9th we had a full house.  Questions in both French and English were given by Jan West and her husband Ray adjudicated.  It was a lively and exciting evening.  We made around €755 and half of the tombola stall proceeds (€161) went to Les Blouses Roses. \nA huge thank you must go to Jan and Ray and also to Lizzie who provided the food and to Claude who helped and of course to those who worked behind the scenes to make this evening such a success. \n\nRifle \nThere were around 200 people at the La Ligue‘s Rifle Pour La Vie in Collioure on November 17th.  It was very well organised.  There was a large screen showing the numbers as they were called which was particularly helpful for the hard of hearing and those unsure of their French. \nThey raised about €4\,000.  Incidentally\, there were just two of us from CSF which was a pity because it was an entertaining evening and a table of 5\, 8 or 10 of us would have had a great time.  Still\, perhaps next year. \n\nChristmas Market\n \nCSF had a couple of tables at the Christmas Market in St Jean Pla de Corts on November 24th.  Our tombola table was strategically positioned just by the front entrance so the impressive array of prizes attracted quite a few people.  We took €240\, of which half goes to La Ligue. \nOur books\, cards and merchandise sold well\, giving us around €520.  Thank you to all those who helped.  I’d also like to say how grateful we are to all of you who came and supported us. \n\nEvents \nAll our events\, some of which come up year after year\, are held not just to raise a bit of money and wave the CSF flag\, they are also opportunities when we can meet and have fun.  We never under-estimate the commitment of our members and supporters.  We’ve come to rely on you in fact.  You turn up\, participate or come and watch\, you spread the word or you just pop in from time to time. \nPerhaps some of you are not fully aware of the whole CSF package.  Have a look at our website or Facebook sometime. See how much your support matters and take inspiration from some of the personal stories. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nTHIS MONTH’S DROP-INS:\nChristmas Cards are now available at all the Drop In venues! \nWednesday 4th December – Céret – 10.30am – 12pm\n \nPablo’s Bar in the Place Pablo Picasso.   Come and join us for coffee and conversation.  There are books and DVDs. \nMonday 16th December – Laroque des Albères – 10.30am – 12pm\n \nCome along to the Café des Artistes and have a browse\, buy a coffee and take two books.  We have a large turnover of books and DVDs and we encourage you to bring as many paperbacks as you can carry but please don’t bring hardbacks or text books.  If you need to park your car close by\, someone will come and help you carry the books to the café. \nThursday 18th December- Ille sur Têt – 10.30am – 12pm\n \nThere’ll be coffee and cake at Lizzie’s as usual.  Perhaps even a mince pie or two.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nLOOKING AHEAD\nWednesday 29th January AGM CSF Sud\nOur own AGM will be in Carcassonne again next year.  It will be held\, as before\, at the Restaurant L’Oliveraie\, 850 Boulevard Denis Papin\, 11000 Carcassonne (just off the A61). There will be a meeting followed by lunch. \nThe meeting will include a talk from Martin Christlieb from the Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford.  Some of you will remember him.  He has spoken to us on two different occasions over the past 4 years.  Intriguingly\, his title is Public Engagement Manager and if you’d like to find out more have a look at this . \nIt’s worth mentioning at this early stage\, if anyone would like to car share\, please let me know and arrangements will be made.  There will be more details next month. \n\nSaturday 7th March Vins des Femmes\nThe Domaine Sanac Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines is organising a wine tasting at the Chateau de L’Ou in Montescot.  If you’re wondering how it got its name\, you can find out here. You’ll also find some more interesting facts about this domaine and its wine producers. \nAt the wine tasting we hope to have 12 wine producers. There’ll be music and a local artist will be doing something creative.  It sounds like a chance to come and try some new wines. \nMore details later but please put this date in your diary. \n\nWednesday 15th April CSF Open Meeting Perpignan\nPlease make a note of this date because you won’t want to miss our annual Open Meeting.  It’s very informal.  For the uninitiated it’s a chance to find out more about CSF and chat with friends over a really good lunch. \nAs always it will be held at the Hotel Le Mas des Arcades in the Porte d’Espagne area of Perpignan\, a venue which is convenient for everyone. \nWe gather for morning coffee and the meeting starts with a short update of CSF business.  It will be followed by a talk from our guest speaker.  This time we are fortunate to have with us Doctor Nicolas Van Oudenhove who is the Head of Palliative Care at Perpignan Hospital where he works with cancer patients. \nThe meeting will finish with a three-course lunch.  I will be sending out a menu next month. \nI know it’s a bit early but do let me know if you would like to come.  Open means open – everyone is welcome including family and friends. \n\nWednesday 3rd – Sunday 7th June Cycle for Life\nAll we know at the moment is that this will be from Rochefort to Thiviers in the Charente/Charente Maritime area.  Penny will have more details on this in a week or so.  sud-penny@cancersupportfrance.org \nFind out about last year’s event here. \n\nSunday 7th June Vide Grenier Saint Cyprien\nThis is a large Vide Grenier\, organised by La Ligue\, which is held every year at this time.  We normally have a couple tables and it’s very well-attended. \nDiana Eastaff\n[/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=”” style=”flat” css=”.vc_custom_1567169370488{background-color: #abc3d8 !important;}”]Are you interested in finding out more about what CSF does?  If so please email Penny (sud-president@cancersupportfrance.org) \nPlease pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested in any of these events and for further information please contact me by e-mail on deastaff@yahoo.co.uk or by phone 04 68 82 90 49. \nAnd check out our website at csf-suddefrance.webs.com for all our future events[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n

SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: JANUARY 2020
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHello Everyone\n\nWaking up at six in the morning in a house somewhere between the Surrey Hills and the South Downs\, pitch dark outside\, I could hear birdsong.  Later\, as I trudged along a country road towards an English pub on a village green\, on a Christmas morning\, I felt a tug at my heart strings.  A white wine spritzer never tasted as good as it did then. The beery smell and the blazing fire and the comforting sound of other people’s conversations.  Good old Blighty!  \n\n\nWe didn’t do presents this year but coming home after 10 days away was a gift in itself.  The sun still shines\, the sky is still blue and the bare branches have never looked so good.  There were even a couple of purple irises poking their heads out to greet me. \n\n\nHere’s something really uplifting for the start of a new year.   \n\nNew Year Honour for French cancer carer\nA volunteer with a charity that helps English-speaking cancer patients and their friends and families throughout France has been awarded the British Empire Medal Award in the New Year Honours List.\nCatherine Hartley was nominated for the award by fellow volunteers and clients and their families from Cancer Support France Languedoc (CSFL)\, as well as a senior oncologist at the Institut du Cancer de Montpellier Hospital.\n\nPlease click here to read the article in full.\n\n****************************************************************************************************************************************\nHELP! \nCSF is looking for somewhere secure and watertight to store the books for its monthly book exchange at the Café des Artistes in Laroque.  We usually have around 10 supermarket size bags of books and a few boxes of DVDs.  Access would be needed every third Monday of the month to collect the books at around 10am and return them around 12.30pm. \n\nIf you know of anywhere or know anyone who may be able to help\, then PLEASE contact me.  \n****************************************************************************************************************************************\nThere is only one Drop-In this month:\n\nWednesday 15 January Ille-sur-Têt 10.30-12 \n\nLizzie is opening her kitchen again this month.  Please come and see us.  There’ll be coffee and cakes as usual. \n\n\n\nFriday 24 January FORWARD PLANNING MEETING 2pm\n\nThis is a bit of a brainstorming meeting which will be at Miranda’s house\, 29 Rue Pasteur\, 66670 Bages.   Members are invited to come along and talk about CSF events for the coming year.  One of the things we will be talking about is an event we’re calling Living Well after Cancer.  We need to find a venue for this.  Put your thinking caps on and bring some ideas to the table or just come and join in the discussion – all input is important. \n\n\nIf you would like to be part of our forward planning\, can you please let me know as soon as possible.  If you have some ideas but you can’t make the meeting\, please email them to Maggie: Sud-po@cancersupportfrance.org \n\n\n\nWednesday 29 January AGM CSF Sud 9.45am\n\nOur own AGM will be in Carcassonne again this year.  It will be held\, as before\, at the Restaurant L’Oliveraie\, 850 Boulevard Denis Papin\, 11000 Carcassonne (just off the A61).\nwww.loliveraie.fr\n\nOur speaker will be Dr Martin Christlieb\, from the Department of Oncology at Oxford University. The subject of his talk will be on clinical trials of new treatments and how to measure their effectiveness.   Martin has spoken to us on two different occasions over the past 4 years.  Intriguingly\, his title is Public Engagement Manager and if you’d like to find out more have a look at this:   (this is a different link to the one in last month’s letter)\n\nThe cost of the lunch will be 20€ – please reply with a cheque and your menu choices before  MONDAY 20th JANUARY 2020.  (If you would like to pay electronically please contact Hazel: hazelturner10@gmail.com)\n\n\nPlease note that travel expenses are not paid for attending the AGM.   Car sharing is easy to arrange.  Just let me know as soon as possible. \n\n\nLOOKING AHEAD\nSaturday 7 March « Vin des Femmes » From 5pm\nThe Domaine Sanac Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines is organising a wine tasting at the Chateau de L’Ou in Montescot.  \n\nYou can click on this link to find out more about the domaine\n\n\nAt the wine tasting we hope to have 12 wine producers. Salting is a hard way of making a living and\, generation by generation\, the anchovy salting families have become fewer and fewer. \nIn 1870 there were 140 boats and 800 fishermen. Now\, in Collioure\, only two remain: Ets Roque and Ets Desclaux. You will find their shops almost next door to each other as you come into Collioure on the main road. \n \nAnchovies and Family Businesses\nRobert Desclaux still works with his son and daughter in law. He remembers with nostalgia the beach of Collioure full of traditional boats\, the women mending the nets\, the smell of anchovies heavy on the air. A time when all Colliurenqs of standing had a house\, a boat plus five sailor/fishermen and a boy to man it and a vineyard to work in when the Tramontane blew too strongly for fishing. \n \nRecent European “norms” have made the work less smelly and possibly more hygienic but not always cost effective. \nCertainly the absurd insistence on driving tons of heads and entrails of the tiny fish to distant incinerators seems far more polluting than the old method of tipping them back into the sea. \nBoth houses are fascinating to visit\, it is possible to see the factory where teams of workers\, clad in regulation white overalls\, hair and hands covered\, fillet and salt\, clean\, pack and label anchovies for distribution all over France\, Europe and the US. \nThe skill and artistry with which the anchovies are arranged in their jars and indeed the entire preceding labour intensive production line should ensure a heightened appreciation of the fiddly little fish when next you meet them in your Salade de Collioure. \nEven without the traditional boats the bay of Collioure is a stunningly beautiful place. \nOn one side\, sticking out into the sea\, the church: Our Lady of the Angels\, Notre Dame des Anges\, the church angels waging a constant battle against the rising damp. They seem to be winning. The church stands firm against the waves of winter storms and summer swimmers. \nBold and beautiful\, a haven of peace and magnificence\, it has become a symbol of Collioure\, beloved by every resident\, featured on every tourist’s holiday photos. \nIt was built in 1684\, attaching itself to a medieval lighthouse\, which became the church clock tower. The famous pink dome was added in 1810. \nTake some time to go inside and admire the varied and splendidly carved baroque altars. Put a euro in the timer by the altar and the glow of gold-leaf will draw your attention to one of Sunyer’s masterpieces. \nDown each side of the church are four more altars\, of particular interest\, on the left hand side\, one to St Vincent\, protector of sailors and patron saint of Collioure. His gruesome end in 303 AD\, at the command of the Roman Emperor Diocletian is graphically depicted. Mass is held every Wednesday and Sunday. \nAcross the bay\, its walls also plunging into the sea\, is the Summer Palace of the Kings of Mallorca. Imposing and grand\, it is the very heart of Collioure. Built on Roman remains that were in turn built on Visigoth remains the site was first mentioned in 673. The castle we know today was built between 1242 and 1280 at the same time as the Palais Royal in Perpignan. \nThe Spanish occupied it until 1642 when the French took up residence. \nVauban\, military architect to Louis XIV made a few alterations involving the razing to the ground a large amount of the existing town and obliging the townsfolk to rebuild where Faubourg is today. \nNow\, shows and exhibitions are held within its ancient walls\, music\, dancing and festivals. Floodlights and fireworks light up the castle keep. It can be visited daily\, and\, inevitably\, the views from the ramparts are splendid. \nMany famous names of the XX century have visited Collioure. Antonio Machado\, arguably Spain’s greatest poet remains entombed in the cemetery. Escaping the Spanish Civil War he arrived on February 2nd 1939. \nHe died at the Casa Quintana on the 22nd of the same month. His tomb has become a place of pilgrimage\, decked with flowers\, ribbons and remembrance plaques. Set into the headstone is a letterbox. Everyday tributes and poems are slipped in.He has become a symbol of exile\, growing in stature each year. \nEvery February\, the Antonio Machado Foundation in Collioure\, holds an international literature competition in his memory. \nMaurice Chevalier\, Edith Piaf\, Raoul Dufy\, Salador Dali\, Picasso\, Charles Trenet made briefer and happier visits. \nBut it is perhaps Henri Matisse who\, with Derrain\, in 1905\, was responsible for immortalising Collioure. Collioure certainly owes a lot of its fame to their paintings. \nA reciprocal arrangement as it turned out. Those paintings now hang in famous Art Museums all over the world. \nMatisse arrived in Collioure in May 1905 at the age of 36\, depressed\, full of self doubts and very short of money. As soon as he got off the train he was struck by the vitality of the little Catalan fishing port. His depression lifted. Everywhere he saw colour and light\, almost violent in its intensity. \nHe sent a simple postcard to his friend Andre Derrain. “Venez!” it said. And Derrain came. Later\, he was to remark that the colours of Collioure that summer of 1905 had been as “sticks of dynamite”. \nThe two artists certainly went into battle together. Their easels often side by side\, they painted Collioure from every angle. \nThe colour danced off the walls\, sparkled on the sea\, hung on the white sails of the Catalan Barques\, glistened on the fish scales clinging to the black clothing of the women mending the nets. \nThe two artists captured it on their canvasses. Blue/green\, rose/pink\, reds\, deep blues\, violets\, they painted from their very souls. \nColours that had never been used to such effect before: Red sand\, pink sea; Matisse painted what he felt. \nDerrain’s paintings may have been more conventional in that the sand was often yellow but his use of colour was every bit as powerful as Matisses’…and when they showed their Collioure canvasses at the Salon d’Automne in Paris that October\, “Fauves!” “Wild beasts!” was the scandalised cry of the leading art critics. \nIt was not a compliment. But the name stuck\, Fauvism was born and Matisse was head Fauve and Collioure was where it had happened. \nIn 1994 « Le Chemin du Fauvisme » was set up\, a guided walk with strategically placed copies of the paintings of Derrain and Matisse in the positions in which they were painted. \nThe lively and knowledgeable art historian who leads the walk makes Matisse and Derrain come alive. Through her eyes we see the difference between two paintings painted at the same moment from the same balcony above the Tam Tam boutique. We walk through the narrow alleys\, up to the top of the town where again they painted side by side\, the same view\, but different pictures. \nWe follow their footsteps\, understand their emotion\, see the Collioure they saw and painted. \nIt was the wild and wonderful Fauves\, who put Collioure on the art map of Europe if not the world. And there it remains\, the Jewell of the Cote Vermeille\, loved and enjoyed by its 3000 permanent residents and almost submerged by the thousands of visitors who flood in each summer. \nDon’t miss Collioure’s Museum of Modern Art. Started by the artist Jean Peske in 1930\, it is a peaceful and inspiring gallery. Situated in the Villa Pams next to the Dominican Convent now wine cellar\, the permanent exhibition is extensive and\, during the spring and summer temporary exhibitions add an extra artistic dimension to your visit. \nForts surrounding Collioure are many: Miradou\, St Elme\, Dugommier\, Carre and Rond. And of these the only one still in use militarily is Fort Miradou. Transformed by Vauban out of an ancient medieval chateau it is now the Centre National d’Entrainement Commando\, possibly most beautiful garrison in France\, at least in terms of position. \nAs darkness falls\, Fort St Elme floats\, floodlit in the night sky\, still standing guard over Collioure. The fort that surrounds the XIV century watch tower was begun in 1552 for Charles Quint and improved upon by Vauban under the orders of Louis XIV in 1659. Fought over by French and Spanish in many a border skirmish it was finally sold at auction in August 1913. It is privately owned but can be visited. Check the times at the Tourist Office. \nFort Dugommier\, named after a famous French General from Guadeloupe\, was one of several military defences built during the second half of the XIX century to protect both Collioure and Port Vendres from invasion by sea. Particularly from the British\, Nelson’s reputation a worry to the French military at the time. It was never used in action and fell into ruin fifty years after it was finished. How could those military planners have guessed that an Irishman would facilitate the British invasion\, by air\, a century and a half later? \nIn the old quarter of Collioure\, a tangle of narrow alleys\, steps\, tall\, brightly painted houses\, tumbling bouganvillea and geraniums\, artists studios\, small shops are delight to wander round\, very different now from the days when fishermen and sailors lived there\, the smell of salting anchovies heavy on the air\, open drains running down the cobbles\, washing slung from house to house. The brilliant colouring of the houses began with the fishermen using up paint left over from decorating their Catalan Barques\, boats\, in those days\, taking priority over houses. \nDotted all around Collioure are picture frames on stands. Steps allow you to look through the frame. Each one gives a differing view of the famous clocher of Collioure. You will see people photographing the framed view or\, conversely\, the framed face. A pleasant stroll around the town reveals they total twelve. \nFew people recognise their erotic content or how ‘the clocher’s tumescent dome appears to sink into the bay as the frames rise higher\, till it assumes an almost clitoral form\, the bay of Collioure awash with semen-like anchovies’. Or such was the original description of the artist Marc Andre De Figueres when his “Points of View” work of art was first installed in 1991 … But\, of course\, we are all entitled to our own point of view of the view. \nStreet performers and entertainers abound in the summer holiday months. During the day you may be serenaded by gipsy kings or Charles Trenet lookalikes as you eat your seafront seafood. \nMime artists\, musicians of very varied skills\, jugglers\, fire-eaters may obstruct your passage along the Boromar or Faubourg. Silent statues wait\, unmoving\, scaring and fascinating small children\, till a coin in their begging bowl brings them to life. \nCollioure evenings are alive with entertainment. Enterprising\, often amusing\, gentle and not so gentle tones of pan pipes and solo saxophonists fill the air. \nFrench chansons vie with remarkable renditions of old Beatles songs. They all add a carnival dimension to an atmosphere already rife with carnival atmosphere. There are restaurants to suit every taste. Don’t miss the bar in the legendary Hotel des Templiers where the walls are hard to see so close together are the paintings. \nThere are hotels\, there is a Casino\, incorporating the largest open air discothèque in France\, a traditional carousel\, a cinema. Under the plane trees every Wednesday and Sunday a lively market takes place. There are festivals and fireworks galore. The list of clubs and societies at the town hall is long. Collioure may be overcrowded in August but for the rest of the year it is beautiful place in which to spend a day\, a weekend\, a month\, or even the rest of your life \n
