SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: AUGUST 2020
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\n\n\n\nIt’s all been rather quiet over the past few months.  We are waiting with bated breath to see what will happen in September\, hoping that we can restart our calendar with our Activity for Life event\, the Walk for Life. \nMy walking has tailed off a bit\, mainly due to\, well\, I suppose\, the weather. As a sun-worshiper\, I have to draw the line somewhere and so walking in full sun and 30° heat is off the cards. \nI’m so envious of everyone’s bougainvillea.  Our’s is a rather thorny\, leafy affair which has been cut hard back because it’s in the wrong place and people sitting near it have complained.  Those magnificent displays of purple and deep pink spread themselves over walls and front porches.  There’s very little that can beat them except perhaps some brightly coloured houses!  This is a fairly recent trend around here.  Our street wouldn’t look out of place on the set of a Disney film. \nYou may remember that earlier this year\, in March\, we held an event at the Chateau de l’Ou near Villeneuve de la Raho called Vins de Femmes.  We had a terrific response and many people said what a good evening it was.  Well\, we raised €3500!  Thank you very much to all who came and supported us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrop In – Ille sur Tet\nLizzie’s Kitchen has now been sold.  We will let you know as soon as we have found a new venue. \n\nCovid-19 Bulletins\nHere is the latest bulletin put together by CSF Languedoc.  As well as giving advice on managing the risks of Covid-19\, wearing a mask\, the app and scams and fraud\, it also talks about Brexit preparations and applications for a residency permit. \n\nDATES FOR THE DIARY\n\n\n\n\nThursday 10th September Activity for Life Maureillas \nAs far as we know\, our Walk for Life will go ahead!  The venue is booked and we have planned and walked the two routes. \nWe’ll have books and bottles.  We would be very grateful for bottles for our Bottle Stall so please do bear this in mind over the summer when you just might have one or two left overs! \nDrinks will be on sale and\, we hope\, cakes and biscuits\, so bring a picnic and join in the fun.  There’ll be plenty of picnic tables in shady spots\, well spaced out to ensure distancing. \nWe really hope that we can successfully run this event which has been so popular in past years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 23rd September Cycle For Life 2020 Rochefort to Angoulême \n\n\nAfter recent announcements we are quietly confident that the Cycle for Life will go ahead.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will be using the Flow Velo route.  The ride will take place over 4 days starting on Wednesday 23rd September in Rochefort and ending in Angoulême on Saturday lunchtime with a welcome.\n\nThe overnight stops will be at Saint-Savinien and Cognac\, arriving in Angoulême on Friday evening 25th.  Some cyclists have rebooked hotels now that they are able to cycle again.\n\nOn the morning of Saturday 26th there will be a local short ride organised around the area\, rather as we did at Agde a couple of years ago.  That means people can set off home or may even take the chance to stay on for a long weekend.\n\n\n\n\n\nFurther information available here.\n\n\n\nSaturday 17th October Autumn Ball – CANCELLED \nI’m sorry to say that the decision has been made to cancel the Autumn Ball for this year. \nThe feeling is that with all the restrictions which we would have to put in place with regard to Covid-19\, the evening would not be an enjoyable one! \nLet’s hope that next year we will be able to have a bumper event. \n\nSunday 29th November Christmas Market St Jean Pla de Corts \nIt looks like this will be going ahead.  It’s a great way to start the Christmas season with lots of present ideas on the arts & craft stalls\, plus cards and gifts\, stocking fillers\, homemade puds\, mince pies and cakes. \nLizzie’s Kitchen will be open for coffee\, tea and sandwiches.  We plan on making the area a bit bigger this year\, with a lot more tables. \n\n\n\n\nPlease remember that if anyone is struggling or needing help\, the CSF telephone and email helplines are always open.   We are there for everyone needing assistance at this time as well as for those affected by cancer. \n\n\n\n\nWe will keep everyone informed of any further developments. \n\n\n\nDiana Eastaff \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The doors are open at the museum of Collioure
DESCRIPTION:The doors are open at the Musée d’art moderne in Collioure\nBy Ellen Turner Hall \nThe Musée d’art moderne in Collioure is offering the public a chance to participate in guided visits and art-related workshops throughout the months of July and August. \nArtists and guides will be on hand to welcome you and initiate you in a rich and ambitious programme of activities in and around Collioure. In an effort to attract families and promote inter-generational exchanges\, participation is open to everyone\, from the age of six upward. \nClaire Muchir\, the director of the museum since September 2019\, told me the idea for the programme was born under Covid-19 lockdown. While museums were closed and exhibitions were cancelled\, the public turned online for music\, art\, dance and theatre. \nThis thirst for culture became an inspiration for Muchir to reach out to as wide a public as possible. Thus the open doors. Muchir says the great chance you have here is to see the work of art and the original landscape right before your eyes. \nVisits to the current exhibition\, L’eau à la bouche (the love affair between Collioure and the sea) will be led by a guide who speaks French\, English and German\, while in the workshops the artists usually speak some English. The workshops invite you to explore a variety of art forms:  painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, photography\, engraving and writing\, each one presented by an expert in the field. \nTo ensure social distancing each workshop is limited to 8 people and individual material will be provided by the artist leading the activity. Places are by reservation. \nThe doors are open. Why not step in? \n \n

Avoid disappointment and secure your place at the summer’s hottest XS festival now. \n\n\n\n1 day pass : 25€\n3 day pass : 65€\n\n\n\nChâteau Valmy\n\nAs you drive along the voie rapide between Argelès and Collioure\, the Disneyesque turrets of the Château de Valmy rise out of the vineyards like a fairytale. \nWhen Joseph Bardou made his fortune from the invention of JOB cigarette papers\, his son Pierre commissioned the Danish Architect Viggo Dorph-Petersen\, well known for his extravagant Belle Epoque style\, to build a château for each of his three children. \nFor his son Justin\, Chateau d’Aubiry in Céret\, for his daughter Camille\, Chateau Ducup St Paul in Perpignan\, and for his daughter Jeanne\, recently married to Jules Pams\, Château de Valmy. Her portrait hangs today in the salon on the first floor. \nJules Pams became French Minister of Agriculture and the wines of Valmy graced the tables of royalty. Jules and Jeanne died leaving no heirs. In 1930\, Victor Piex\, a wealthy distiller\, bought the château\, and the domaine prospered. \nAfter his death in 1952\, deserted by children and grandchildren\, the once magnificent property started to deteriorate… empty rooms\, leaking roof….. \nIn 1997\, Victor Peix’s grandson and family took up the challenge\, breathing new life into vineyards and château. \nThe Château de Valmy was turned into a chic guest house\, peaceful\, and picturesque\, with five gracious en suite rooms\, looking out across the vines and down to the sea. \n \nA smart new tasting ‘cave’ opened in 2013\, with endless views over the perfectly manicured vineyards. The range of Valmy wines runs from a delicate white\, vinified in oak barrels\, through rosé\, a range of reds to l’Or de Valmy\, a beautifully balanced naturally sweet wine. \nTaste in the cave before choosing wine with your meal\, because in 2014\, La Table de Valmy opened its doors\, stylish restaurant\, showcase for Valmy wines\, and reviewed in the last edition of P-O Life. ‘Taken as a complete package\, the location\, the view\, the wine\, the food and the general ambiance\, we thought it was terrific’\, wrote the reviewer. \nAnd really\, dining on that pretty terrace with spectacular views over the vines and the sea – well\, what’s not to like? \nBut there’s more to Valmy than wine and food.\nWhilst the Chateau and vineyards are still owned by descendants of Victor Peix\, six hectares of land within the grounds are owned by the Commune of Argelès\, free and open for the public to stroll through and enjoy. \nThis council run park with café\, play and picnic area\, nature trails\, fountains and waterfall is all rather less chic than the immaculate new facilities of the cave and restaurant\, but it’s a pleasant ramble\, great for the kids……oh\, and did I already mention the views? \nEnjoy the impressive family of storks living in the park or spend a magical hour with the charming falconers of the Aigles de Valmy (www.lesaiglesdevalmy.com) watching this spectacular show of birds of prey in free flight. Sadly\, due to financial constraints\, this could be their last year. \n \nOn the first floor\, next to the entrance to the park\, you will find a small but rather fascinating exhibition of the Retirada\, and the internment on the beaches of Argelès of 200\,000 Republicans fleeing the Franco regime in 1939. \nOpen all year round\, this permanent exhibition explains the Spanish Civil war via ancient newspaper clippings and other media from that period\, along with historical frescos\, television documentaries and works of art showing the pitiful living conditions in the camp. \nSeveral events take place at the Chateau during the year; flower show\, antiques festival\, pop concerts\, and the park closes when hosting large-scale festivals like Les Déferlantes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n
