SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2021
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\nI haven’t had much time for walks over the last couple of months so today was full of surprises.  I expected to see a barren landscape and indeed the Mairie has done a good job in keeping the undergrowth clipped. \nBut they can’t keep the wild fennel from wanting to show off its bright yellow flowers.  It’s everywhere and cheers up the scrubby open spaces.  Something else which insists on being seen is the humble vine.  Its tendrils twist themselves around all the brambles and bushy shrubs which have taken over this bit of land – it was once upon a time dominated by vineyards.  Some of them are even offering small bunches of wrinkled\, purple grapes. \nApart from my bumper crop of figs this year\, 10 at the last count\, there’s very little to please me in my garden.  I thought I had a cistus crisis!  Scantly clad in clusters of shrivelled leaves\, my plant is still green but looking very sorry for itself\, droopy and downcast. Then\, on my walk back through the wood behind the house\, there were  hundreds of cistus bushes and\, guess what\, their branches were black and sparsely leaved. \nEverything has its own way of dealing with a long hot summer and we should never underestimate the force of nature. \n\n\n\n\nReading & Info\nCat Hartley of CSF Languedoc has been awarded the British Empire Medal. \nhttps://cancersupportfrance.org/cat-hartley-receives-british-empire-medal \n\n« More money will be targeted at research for the most difficult cancers to treat\, including lung\, liver\, pancreas and oesophagus. There will be more investment in MRI scanning machines to improve detection » (Connexion newspaper Aug 2021) \nRead what our President Pat Lockett had to say about this when she was interviewed on the radio last month.  (Sorry about the « busy » Connexion site! Do please persevere.) \nhttps://www.connexionfrance.com/French-news/Health/France-s-10-year-plan-aims-to-cut-high-number-of-avoidable-cancers-with-increased-tobacco-prices-and-campaigns-against-excessive-drinking \n\nCharges to be announced at « Urgences » \nClick on this link to find out about new charges being Introduced at Hospital Emergency Rooms from September 2021 \nhttps://forum.cancersupportfrance.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1394 \n\nInformation Days \nThese informal meetings will take the form of a morning and an afternoon session. \nSome of you have already signed up for this and we will let you know a date very soon. \nIn the morning we will talk about CSF – history\, aims\, how it supports etc. There will be a bring and share lunch.  Then in the afternoon there will be an Introduction to Active Listening for those who would like more detailed information about the role of an Active Listener. \nYou don’t have to be a CSF member.  This is a good opportunity for everyone to discover more about CSF and the support we give to English-speaking people in France who are touched by cancer and to find out how you can be involved. \nPlease contact Maggie (sud-maggie@cancersupportfrance.org) if you would like to join us.  You can stay for the whole day or just for the morning session and of course all are welcome to bring and share lunch. \n\n\nDrop Ins – don’t forget your Pass Sanitaire please!\nWednesday 1 September\, Pablo’s Bar – Céret\, 10.30 \nDo come along to Pablo’s.  They are happy to have us sitting outside at tables which is great news.   We look forwarding to seeing you. \nWednesday 15 September\, Villa Lafabrègue Prades\, 10.15-12 \nPlease come and join us outside in the garden for coffee\, tea and books.  Please note\, we start at 10.15.  The address is 15 Avenue Louis Prat\, 66500 Prades. \nMonday 20 September\, Laroque\, 10.30-12     \nThe Café des Artistes is a great venue for meeting up.  There will be masses of books of course so bring your own paperbacks for exchange.  You can buy a coffee and take two books.  Come for a chat\, meet friends or bring family. \n\nEvents\n\n\nThursday 2nd Sept – Sunday 5th Sept   Cycle for Life  2021 – Carbonne to Fronsac \nThis is happening next week!  But it’s not too late to sign up!  \nKnown as the Garonne Challenge\, the bike ride will follow the Parcours Cyclable de la Garonne for virtually it’s full length\, from glimpses of the Pyrenees at Carbonne to ending up right in the mountains alongside the river at Fronsac\, not very far from the Spanish border. \nWe have three of our own members participating in this very worthwhile Cycle for Life event.  Hazel Turner\, former CSF Sud President\, and her partner Geoff\, and Lucy Guernah who lives in the P-O and has supported the Walk as well as the Cycle Ride in the past\, with her family. \nIf you would like to support them here are their links: \nwww.alvarum.com/hazelandgeoffturner \nhttps://www.alvarum.com/lucyguernah2 \nI do urge you to please contact Sasha Hendersen admin@cancersupportfrance.org asap if you would like to get involved. \nThere is no official deadline and we’d welcome people turning up on the day if they wish.  As long as they have a Pass Sanitaire and sign a disclaimer form on arrival\, we would be happy for them to join. \nSasha has said it won’t be a problem for anyone signing up last minute. The more the merrier! \nCheck out the Facebook page and our own website. \nIf you have already registered\, you can start fundraising by going to www.alvarum.com/charity/2039/challenge/2226. \n\nThursday 9 September                 Walk for Life                      Prat de la Fargue – Maureillas \nOur own Activity for Life event is the Walk for Life. \nWe have now had confirmation from the Mairie that we can go ahead with this event! \nWe are going to be celebrating – we have waited so long for this day when we can at last relax and get together and raise a bit of money and have a jolly good time doing it! \nPlease note:  those taking part in the walks and pétanque must present a Pass Sanitaire \nAs you know there will be two walks.  The longer one\, of 8 kms\, takes around 2.5 hours and climbs above Maureillas with some lovely views.  The shorter one\, around 1.5 hours\, follows a similar route to previous years\, again with lovely views\, and is essentially flat. \nCoffee will be served from around 9am \nThe long walk sets off at 9.30am and registration is from 9am. \nThe short walk sets off at 10.30. \nThere will be pétanque for those who wish for something less energetic. \nTo supplement your picnics\, there will be savoury food available\, as well as cakes\, and of course wine\, beer and soft drinks. \nMusic is from 2 Partout\, that is Rosie and Maurice playing jazz sax and piano\, and we are supported by “Musiques à Maureillas”. \nIf you would like to participate in one of the sponsored walks\, it’s never too early or late to contact Penny Parkinson (sud-penny@cancersupportfrance.org) \nAs always\, if anyone can’t join us on the day\, we would be very grateful for donations of bottles or gifts to the lucky-dip stall.  Please let me know as soon as possible so that I can arrange pick-up or drop-off.  Thank you. \nBelow are the A4 posters for this event\, in English and French.  If you know somewhere you can display it then please do.  Some café owners and local shops are often pleased to do so when they know who were are!  It may help to point out the La Ligue connection at the bottom of the poster.  Many thanks. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nLooking ahead\nWednesday 13 October CSF Sud  –  Autumn Open Meeting – Perpignan \nWell\, it looks like it’s all systems go for this much delayed get-together! \nWe’ll be at Le Mas des Arcades Hotel in Perpignan again.  (840 Av d’Espagne\, 66000) It’s in the area called Porte d’Espagne\, on the roundabout opposite Darty. \nWe start with coffee at 9.45.  The meeting begins with a brief update on all the CSF news. \nOur main event is of course our speaker and we are very pleased to have with us Charles Van Oudenhove who is a doctor in the Palliative Care Mobile team in Perpignan Hospital where he has been working for the last twenty years. \nHe and his team go wherever they are called in the P-O\, hospitals\, clinics\, retirement homes or to people’s homes – helping doctors and nurses give the best palliative care possible. \nThis will certainly be an interesting talk. \nThe meeting will finish with a three-course lunch. \nOf course a Pass Sanitaire will be necessary for all attendees. \nI will be sending an invitation to everyone very shortly\, which will include the lunch menu. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease remember that if anyone is struggling or needing help\, the CSF telephone and email helplines are always open.   We are there for everyone needing assistance at this time as well as for those affected by cancer. There is also lots of information on our website.\n\n\n\n\nDiana Eastaff \n

SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 2021
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\nI spent 10 days in Brittany recently. Beautiful at this time of year of course and very green! Good to get back though. Warm and sunny and still that amazing late afternoon light – the sun slightly lower in the sky and the hills misty and slightly out of focus. Nip out just before dusk and catch the sounds of nature turning in for the night. \nOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in France\, it’s called “Octobre Rose”. We are all familiar with the pink ribbon\, the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. The aim of this worldwide annual campaign\, organised by major breast cancer charities\, is to highlight the importance of breast awareness\, education and research\, and to raise funds. \nWatch out for news about fund-raising ideas and\, if you don’t have a pink ribbon\, why not wear something pink every day in October to show solidarity? \nRead more about this and La Ligue’s activities in CSF Languedoc’s newsletter. Click image below. \n\n \n\n\n\nChristmas cards\nThis link takes you straight to our Christmas card selection. If you would like to order\, please contact Maggie Longworth (sud-maggie@cancersupportfrance.org) \n\nActivity for Life 2021\nCycle for Life \nCancer Support France’s main national fund-raising event for 2021\, Activity for Life\, has been judged a great success. \nFor 4 days in September participants cycled and walked around the foothills of the Pyrenees\, raising money as they went. The amount raised was a record\, thanks mainly to the participants but also to sponsorship from CSF’s local associations. \nCSF President Pat Lockett said “I saw great support for each other\, humour and friendships which blossomed as the days progressed. Heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved – the riders and walkers\, the volunteers who organised the event\, and the caterers and restaurateurs who kept people fuelled for the event.” \nWalk for Life \nWith the continued support of the Mairie\, the annual September Activity for Life\, our own Walk for Life at Maureillas Las Illas\, went ahead. \nDespite thunder and lightning overnight and torrential rain\, 35 people (and some hardy dogs) braved the weather and participated in the walks and pétanque. They were suitably rewarded as the thunder clouds changed into a glorious day. \nThe walkers and their four legged friends were back at “basecamp” by 12.30pm and were able to grab the chance to chat with friends. Beer and wine\, tea and soft drinks and savouries\, as well as home made cakes were on sale to supplement the picnic baskets. \nIncluding our helpers\, around 65 people\, French as well as English speaking\, called by to enjoy the ambiance\, buy a drink\, eat cake and chat. They bought tickets for the ever popular Tombola and the Nespresso machine never stopped! It was a lovely\, happy day. We shared the registration fees with our local La Ligue contre le cancer and a healthy profit of nearly €600 was made. \nA Big Thank You to all of you who were involved in the organisation of this very enjoyable event. \n\n\n\nDrop Ins \nAs these drop ins are likely to be inside\, please don’t forget your Pass Sanitaire. \nWednesday 6 October\, Pablo’s Bar – Céret\, 10.30 \nWe look forward to seeing you at Pablo’s Bar. Books\, coffee and chat. \nMonday 18 October\, Laroque\, 10.30-12     \nThe Café des Artistes is a great venue for meeting up. There will be masses of books of course so bring your own paperbacks for exchange. You can buy a coffee and take two books. Come for a chat\, meet friends or bring family. \nWednesday 20 October\, Villa Lafabrègue Prades\, 10.15-12 \nPlease come and join us for coffee\, tea and books. Please note\, we start at 10.15. The address is 15 Avenue Louis Prat\, 66500 Prades. \n\nEvents\n\n\nWednesday 13 October    9.45am    CSF Sud  –  Autumn Open Meeting – Perpignan \nI’m very happy to report that quite a few of you are coming to our Open Meeting at Le Mas des Arcades Hotel in Perpignan. \nHere’s the address again for those who need it: 840 Av d’Espagne\, 66000 – Porte d’Espagne\, on the roundabout opposite Darty. \nFor those who are still teetering on the edge of uncertainty\, I don’t want to hurry you but please could you let me know by Monday 4 October latest. If you would like me to re-send the invitation with the lunch menu\, I will do so with pleasure. \nA Pass Sanitaire will be necessary for all attendees \nTo re-iterate: we start with coffee at 9.45 followed by the meeting which begins with a brief update on all the CSF news from Maggie and Penny. \nOur main event is of course our speaker and we are very pleased to have with us Charles Van Oudenhove who is a doctor in the Palliative Care Mobile team in Perpignan Hospital where he has been working for the last twenty years.\nHe and his team go wherever they are called in the P-O\, hospitals\, clinics\, retirement homes or to people’s homes – helping doctors and nurses give the best palliative care possible. This will certainly be an interesting talk. \nThe meeting will finish with a three-course lunch. \nFinally\, can I remind you that this time we are limiting numbers to 30 people. \n\nLooking ahead\nTuesday 2 November Information Day – An introduction to Active Listening \nOur meeting will be at Argens-Minervois in the Aude. Coffee will be served at 10am and we’ll start the meeting at 10.30. A light buffet will be available at lunchtime. \nIn the morning we will talk about CSF and in the afternoon we will talk about the role of the Active Listener. Maggie will be sending full details of the whole day shortly. \nRemember\, you don’t have to be a CSF member and you can come for the whole day or just for the morning session. \nIf you are interested\, please do come along. Just contact Maggie Longworth (sud-maggie@cancersupportfrance.org) and let her know.

Our aim is to ensure that no English speaker of any nationality in France needing support\, be they patient\, carer or family member\, is unaware of us. Joining us in the Cycle for Life will help us raise awareness whilst having fun and keeping fit.“\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThis year\, we are travelling from Carbonne 31390 to Fronsac 31199 in the South West of France and this year we are including a walk as well as a bike ride. \n\n\n\n\nThe bike ride (otherwise known as the Garonne Challenge) will follow the Parcours Cyclable de la Garonne for virtually it’s full length\, from glimpses of the Pyrenees at Carbonne to ending up right in the mountains alongside the river at Fronsac\, not very far from the Spanish border. \nThe Saturday cycle event is a circular tour taking in the lovely Neste Valley with our lunch stop (along with the walkers) being nestled below the UNESCO World Heritage site of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (known locally as the Mont St Michel of the south). \nThe walkers have the opportunity of a circular tour starting and finishing at Valcabrère with its superb mosaics and visiting the historic and magnificent cathedral and town at Saint- Bertrand-de-Comminges. \nOur Friday and Saturday night accommodation is at Montréjeau overlooking a lake and with the mountains behind.  We have reserved 9 lovely wooden 2-bedroomed chalets on a ‘first come\, first reserved’ basis. \nOn the Saturday late afternoon we are hoping to give those who want to the opportunity of visiting the caves at the Grottes de Gargas before organising a group meal at Le Paleo restaurant alongside. \nThere is something for everyone\, from shorter flat cycle rides\, to longer day rides\, to the picturesque walk. \nFancy joining us and raising some money for a fantastic cause? Perhaps you would like to volunteer to help us organise and man the event.  If you would then please contact Sasha Hendersen admin@cancersupportfrance.org or check out the Facebook page \n\n\n\n\n\nPat continues: \n“The National association provides support to our local associations but has no independent means of raising funds. In previous years\, sponsorship from the Cycle for Life raised enough funds to cover the costs of the annual three day Trainers’ Conference. This Conference is the most important event in the CSF year\, enabling our trainers to share\, discuss and develop our training. This is vital to ensure a high quality and consistent support service across France. It is also the biggest expense which CSF National faces.”\n\n\n\nCome and join CSF\, meandering through lovely French countryside\, and enjoy the fun.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”” color=”turquoise”]For more details and to download a Participant’s Pack\, please see our Cycle for Life website.  And for more information about CSF and what we do have a look at our website HERE:[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n
