SUMMARY:Mondial du Vent\, Leucate 2022
DESCRIPTION:Mondial du Vent\n\n\n\n\n“Madame\, bear in mind that princes govern all things–save the wind.”\nVictor Hugo (The Infanta’s Rose) \n\n\n\n\nOnce again\, Leucate opens its door for a week to lovers of the sea\, the waves and the wind. All the extreme sports meet up for the 2022 edition of this yearly event. \nOn the programme this year will be funboard\, kitesurf\, sail-carting\, kite flying\, wingfoil and Kitefoil… and many related forms of entertainment throughout the week\, with a bit of help from the Tramontane of course. \nIn 2020\, the event was cancelled\, in 2021 only athletes and their teams could attend so this year\, the 25th anniversary and with Covid restrictions finally eased\, the event is sure to be bigger and better than ever before. \n \nCheck out the site\n The best riders in the world will be on stage with an amazing array of watersports: windsurfing and kitesurfing demonstrations and the first ever Wingfoil World Cup. \nThe village de la glisse will be bursting with stands\, merchandise\, activities and workshops. Test your skills on the InfintityWave\, an artifical yet environmentally friendly wave machine\, throw some shapes in the skate & bike parks\, reach dizzy hieghts on the climbing wall… and much\, much more! \nOn top of the excitement during the day\, the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down… in fact\, it just keeps getting better. Enjoy live concerts and DJ sets on the Friday and Saturday nights\, followed by an impressive firework display to finish off the proceedings (Saturday 10pm). \n \nAbout La Franqui\nThe north wind\, the wind of good weather\, blows with a vengeance at La Franqui. \nAugustus\, first of the Roman Caesars\, defied it and it is still much worshipped by windsurf and sand yacht fanatics\, bringing thousands of extreme water sport fanatics to Leucate and La Franqui every year. \nOriginally a small fishing village\, La Franqui has grown into a successful holiday resort sheltering under its white limestone cliffs on top of which the semaphore of Leucate surveys the seas from the Carmargue to the Spanish border. \nNot only windsurfers but flamingos and a highly productive oyster industry make good use of the waters of the lagoon that lies south of the town. Access to the oyster fishing huts that line the narrow waterway between the lagoon and the sea is from the D627 road that runs from Leucate to Barcarès. Turn off at the sign to the Centre Conchylicole. Almost all the huts offer tasting menus of the freshest and plumpest oysters imaginable\, ideally accompanied by a chilled glass of crisp local white wine. They also sell oysters and conveniently pre-cleaned mussels to take home. \nLeucate beach is long and sandy. On the beach itself\, each year from mid June till the end of August a couple of restaurants rebuild themselves on wooden stilts. Oysters (of course) feature on the deliciously tempting menus as do a la planxa fish and gambas. A good wine list compliments both the food and the view half way to Africa. \nThere are wonderful walks to be had over the cliffs. There is a ruined castle to explore\, jazz and other concerts take place within its crumbling walls. The Corbieres hills\, the immensity of the beaches and the white cliffs plunging into “La Grande Bleue” all add to the magic that is to be discovered exactly 30km from both Perpignan and Narbonne at La Franqui/ Leucate. \n

SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: MAY 2022
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\n\nLooking at last year’s photos a friend had taken when she visited in May\, I see not only that the sun was shining but also that I was wearing shorts! Cast not a clout has been my mantra for many years so I won’t be delving into my summer wardrobe any time soon. \nI try not to look back but this year\, comparisons are inevitable. The events of the last two years have perhaps made us a bit tentative about bounding out and throwing caution to the wind. But look around – blossoms are turning into fruit and the vines are growing greener. More and more birds are flying into our zone and people are spreading their wings and taking off to different parts of the world. \nI’m optimistic for the future and our calendar for the coming months is encouraging. \n\n\nDrop Ins\n\n\nWednesday 4 May\, Pablo’s Bar – Céret\, 10.30 \nCome along for coffee and chat. There will also be books. Céret is a great place to meet up with friends. \nMonday 16 May\, Café des Artistes – Laroque des Albères\, 10.30 \nDo come along\, browse the books and have a coffee. SUMMARY:Musée d'art moderne in Céret
DESCRIPTION:Musée d’art moderne in Céret\nClosed for more than 2 years of renovation\, the Musée d’art moderne in Céret reopened its doors to the public on Saturday 5th March 2022. \nThe brand new 1300m² building will be home to the temporary exhibitions\, meaning the original space will be entirely dedicated to the permanent works by artists including Marc Chagal\, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. \nPaysage de Céret\, Picasso\, 1913\nTemporary exhibition space\nWithin the new building\, the 550m² exhibition hall will mean that curators are no longer forced to dismantle parts of the permanent exhibition to make space for the temporary ones. \nThe main advantage of the new hall is its skylights\, meaning that visitors can contemplate the colours and forms of works in a natural environment. \nThe building also accords staff greater logistical flexibility\, making the reception and change-over of exhibitions much more manageable. \nThe works have been estimated at a whopping €7.5 million\, shared between local\, departmental\, regional and national government. \nViewed as a long-term investment for the next 30 or 40 years\, Céret’s mayor\, Michel Coste\, hopes that the improvements will help Céret\, the Vallespir and the Pyrénées-Orientales to shine\, nationally and internationally. \nFirst exhibition\nAs a beacon of our region’s artistic prowess\, who better to inaugurate the space than a local artist? From the 5th March to 6th June\, enjoy Barcelona-born sculptor\, Jaume Plensa’s newest exhibition\, ‘Each face is a place’ (Chaque visage c’est un lieu). \nNationally and internationally recognised by some of the art’s most prestigious awards\, Plensa has lived\, worked and exhibited all over the world. \nWell-known for sculptures installed in public spaces\, his most recent piece is the 80 foot ‘Water’s Soul’\, overlooking the Hudson River in New Jersey. \n“As climate change already threatens to take hold of our beautiful planet\, we must join together to protect water as one of the most precious elements in nature\,” Plensa said in a written statement. “Water is the source of life\, and ‘Water’s Soul’ is a tribute to that\, it’s a celebration of life.” \nHis work also appears in the 2021 Netflix mini-series\, Stay Close\, featuring Cush Jumbo and James Nesbit. \nWater’s Soul\, Jaume Plensa\, 2021\, New York\n

SUMMARY:CSF NEWSLETTER: JUNE 2022
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\n\nWell\, you know how it is – you’re walking along a quiet woodland track and you hear the sound of a golden oriole. Squinting up into the trees you try and spot him but\, like the nightingale\, he always plays hard to get. \nOn the sandy paths\, lines of ants bring me up short and… talking of ants\, sitting in the crook of my favourite oak tree\, these industrious powerhouses belt up and down the tree trunk\, hell bent on something – finishing before the clock strikes twelve maybe! \nA vast red rash of poppies caught my eye the other day. Where’s a box of paints and a canvas on an easel when you need them. I’m no Monet but I bet I could take a stab at it. \nWe are still searching the P-O for two people to fill our vacancies. \nAt the CSF Sud P-O AGM January 2023\, in accordance with CSF statutes\, Maggie Longworth will be standing down as P-O Representative. She has had 10 enjoyable and satisfactory years on the Sud CSF Conseil. \nWe are therefore looking for two people to share the role of Representative. Briefly the role involves co-ordinating events and activities across the P-O and participating in the general organisation of CSF Sud. \nPerhaps you know someone outside CSF who might be interested in applying? \nIf you do or if you would like more information about the vacancies or about the existing teamwork in the P-O please give Maggie a ring or email her. Her number is 06 80 38 65 96 or email sud-maggie@cancersupportfrance.org. \n\n\nTwo Success Stories\nOur Vide Grenier took place on Sunday 15 May in St Cyprien \nA huge thank you to everyone who helped us on our stall – you were all amazing\, great fun\, master sales people and superb organisers!\nThe grand total taken was €202.76. \nAt our Quiz Night in Eus on Wednesday 18 May there were 50 of us! It was a great success. A lot of people said they had enjoyed the evening and would come back next year. \nJan West was the quiz master and Lizzie Smith prepared the cold buffet. We made €260 on the tombola\, which we share with the Croix Rouge\, plus €235 made in profit for CSF Sud. A big thank you to all involved\, not only on the day but also during the preparation in the months beforehand. \nDrop Ins\n\n\nWednesday 1 June\, Pablo’s Bar – Céret\, 10.30 \nCome along for coffee and chat. It aims to present to the general public the various preventive measures\, the latest therapeutic advances and the support offered to patients and their relatives throughout the course of care. \nCSF have a stand again this year\, as do many others\, so why not come along and have a good look round. \nThe conference itself starts with an introduction at 2pm after which you are invited to attend talks given by specialist professionals and after each talk\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. There will be a game of pétanque\, various stalls and a Tombola and music. \nWe walk in the morning and then enjoy a picnic lunch together. More details to come but\, please\, make a note of the date! \nThursday 13 October\, Sud P-O Open Meeting\, 9.30am \nOur annual Open Meeting is a chance to get together with other members and friends. \nWe will be at the same hotel as usual in Perpignan\, the name has changed\, it is now a Holiday Inn. We will bring you up to date with CSF matters but the main event on the agenda is a talk from our invited speaker who this year will be a lady called Gillie Steele-Bodger who is working with the Restaurants du Coeur. The morning will end with a three-course lunch. I do hope you will join us. \nI’ll be sending you a menu for lunch very soon but until then please put the date in your diary. \nWednesday 16 November\, Bien Etre Event\, Villa Lafabrègue – Prades \nWellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person’s physical\, mental\, emotional and social health factors. \nWe are very excited about out Bien-Etre event which will bring together practitioners in various fields of well-being who offer inspiring\, innovative\, exciting and practical tools for a balanced mind and a healthy body. \nThe Villa Lafabrègue is a house of great character and charm. Built in 1873\, it’s set in beautiful gardens with a magnificent view of Mt Canigou\, a perfect venue for an event such as this. \nVisitors will have a choice of four or five experts who will each present their speciality at specific times. Everyone is free to choose or just free to come and look round. \nTea and coffee will be free and for €10 you can have a light lunch. \nWe are exploring all avenues of mind and body therapies and once we have our team of wellness experts lined up\, we will let you know. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease remember that if anyone is struggling or needing help\, the CSF telephone and email helplines are always open.   We are there for everyone needing assistance at this time as well as for those affected by cancer. There is also lots of information on our website.\n\n\n\n\nDiana Eastaff \n
