Listening not looking

Cheeky wee bisom . I'm fairly sure I heard this during one of his election speeches. I'm sure he said taxe foncière rather than taxe d'habitation and although I thought that he was talking about the need to reduce it, I could have mis-heard this bit. I do tend to listen to the TV while doing someth...

There was a change back in 2015 which means that people who are not tax resident in France can opt, on death, to have their French assets distributed according to the law of their primary residence. Hope it worked out OK ? I've had mixed results there . Relatively small amounts which you can carry past the barrier OK, but recently got turned away when I wanted to dump a very old and heavy PC. The thing's still in the boat of my car.

Employing Somebody on a Short-Tern Temp Basis

Hi, During the summer months I do a bit of letting : not 'on the black' ! Normally I do the cleaning etc., myself , but am getting long in the tooth and last year found it a bit too much . This year have found somebody to help me and as I want it 'all legal and above board', spent some time on line ...

Just to close the story . No luck with Velux head office or Velux techies or electricians: Window too old/badly installed/motor not working/parts not available . Voting Rights

Nearest and dearest : I wish that I hadn't used that that phrase . I didn't mean to imply that that you only had the right to vote on matters that directly concern yourself or even your 'nearest and dearest'. Or, that the right to vote should be based on paying tax . Both popular ideas , particularl...

Votes

Yes, at first thought, if somebody has been out of the country for 15 years or more it does seem that they might have lost their connections with the UK and hence why should they retain the right to vote . It's more nuanced than that : someone could have lived permanently in the UK for 60 years or m...

Wills and children

It changed a few years ago and now you don't have to leave all your 'estate' to your children . I've forgotten the exact percentages , but although in France you can't cut the kids out of your will, unless you haven't made a will, they don't have to receive 100% . A notaire will charge about 100 eur...

Yes, head office, worth a try . I've had more than one go with French SAV . It must be well out of warrenty as I bought the house with it installed 14 years ago . I expect windows to last more than 14 years but suspect that this might be an outdated idea.

I've searched the internet for installers but they don't seem be interested in repairs unless they did the installation themselves . I can see why, there's not a lot of money in travelling a distance to carry out a repair or find that you can't repair it

Rose Tinted

I don't think the idea of the EU is entirely rose tinted . In the scheme of things it's a young organisation . It takes a long time and a lot of faith to grow a working political structure. Many of the current european states are young : Compared to the Act of Union , which might be unacted in the n...
