Hi Dmitri

We were sat in Carcassone airport the other day and wondered why Carcassone has more flights than Perpignan?
My fundamentalist approach suggested that Carcassone attracts from 360 degrees and a wide catchment.
Whereas Perpignan has sea to one side and Spain on another.

Any other clues?

p.s. The airport is developing well. Good work. John

Hello

According to tourist board data, Carcassonne attracts 2m tourists per annum. Perhaps Perpignan attracts fewer?

Hi Ted and Jemima

I don' doubt it. But as many can and will drive, and there is a causal cycle between flight availability and flights taken, I just wondered whether there was something deeper.

My own opinion is that there are too many airports in this region and to have one coastal one plus one interior one (an interchange at Latour de Carol/Puigcerda) would be a more strategic view.

Well, of course it would make more sense, but these airports may just have been developed not out of thin air, but based on pre-existing airstrips and other facilities, be they former military airbases, freight airports, or airstrips that belonged to airplane manufacturers; southern France used to have several aircraft making companies until the 60s.
But yes, on top of that, Carcassonne is a popular touristic destination; Perpignan, not that much.

An update....

Last week, Ryanair announced a programme of cutbacks and it will be reviewing its airport bases and deciding which ones to close by November. Carcassonne airport IS busy but Ryanair flights often have to be diverted to Toulouse because of adverse weather (wind mainly but sometimes low cloud) as there is no automatic landing guidance equipment at the airport (installation promised 2019/20). Watch this space.

These are the last days to complete the survey proposed by Blue Air. This message is intended to anybody interested by a direct service from Manchester/Liverpool area to Perpignan.

It's a big chance we have and we need your full support! We have approached Blue Air for a direct Perpignan-Liverpool service for next summer, that could serve Manchester area and also the needs of travel of Super League fans watching games in Perpignan. Blue Air is asking for recommendations to chose their new route from Liverpool and it's our chance now, but will you follow us???

It's maybe a sign, you will see that the creative on the following link is representing a heart, which lower tip is passing just over Perpignan :)

Please submit your recommendations via this link, and help us to get this direct service from Perpignan!!! We are counting on you, and please pass the info to anybody interested.

With best regards,

@martyn94 : for this kind of route, it would be exactly the same than Birmingham or Dublin for example, we would expect a ratio of 75% travelers from UK and more/less 25% of travelers from France. Then you have the potential linked to the Super Leagues and French fans could be numerous to watch games in UK if an easy and affordable link is offered.
Hello to watch the games now it's difficult! considering the extent of this virus!
