Wood boring ants

Post by russell »

Found these little b*****s had hollowed out, and nested in, a couple of logs in my woodpile. They are about 6 mm long and have bored holes 5 mm diameter. They are clearly not termires but what are they? Should I take any action to eradicate them (other than putting the infested logs on the fire)?

Can anyone identify them?

I think you may be right Kathy. I had thought that carpenter ants where bigger but according to Wikipedia there are more than a thousand species that vary from 1/4 inch to one inch.
