grass seed & dogs

Post by sue and paul »

I just read in 'latest articles' "A pain in the grass".

Our Golden Retriever (RIP) had just this problem some years ago. As we were travelling round France at the time, we visited a couple of different vets. We, and they, thought he had been bitten by a snake, and that's what he was treated for. His neck swelled up on one side from his ear to his throat, and he had a thick lip. When we got home, we took him to our usual vet, who operated on what she believed to be an embedded grass seed - and that's just what she found. He went on to have several happy years before his eventual demise from unrelated causes. Do be careful

Yes, Bisou had exactly the same thing several years ago, after a gambol in the fields around Sorede. She was pawing her ear and rubbing her head along the ground. We decided to be better safe than sorry, and took her straight to the vet, who extracted grass seed from her ear (and charged us a fortune for the fairly quick tweezer manoeuvre) and explained to us that it can actually be fatal if left! He also said that the seed can enter any orifice (if you see what I mean) and it is best to keep them away from cut/mown dried grass of this sort if poss

Both posts sound like an épée tip which punches to the skin of the dogs and it gets very deep quickly. Our dogs are often caused from the épée in their nose and they start to sneeze and sneeze constantly. Sometimes we can remove this ourselves but mostly it means a trip to the vet.

It's usually wild grass which is about 5" to 10" which is kinda dry. You'll find that the épée can get into your socks and will punch a hole into your feet.

This type of weed is found all over Sorede.

Thanks - you are right, BD. The vet said it was an epi/epee
