Dave, was this chilled or frozen? You do see game in the freezer cabinet all year round, and indeed saw some a few times in Le Boulou Netto, would you believe. Conspicuous there were also some pheasants from Suffolk.
Maybe Santiago knows more about this, but we spent quite some time in NZ just over a year ago,and never saw Wild boar on the menu once. Perhaps it's all exported to Super U and Netto !!

That just has to be my favourite meat!!rbg wrote:Ramona, you are making me hungry ( and I just had dinner , which was sanglier stew actually ; the neighbour drops a saucepanful into us from time to time when they catch a biggie. It was yum! Is that a catalan dish? Dunno? We have it with mashed spuds, the sauce is rich and tomatoey and the sanglier is very tender, yummm)
Thanks for the tasty ideas. Incidentally , are you going to the book club on Sun if it is on , maybe we could swap recipe books?!!!! I used to be a veggie until my OH reconverted me!
I love a good stew - prefer it to a slab of steak.
The first time I had sanglier it was cooked for us by a neighbour in Claira (not puddles). Such an eyeopener.
(I remember that the aperitif was served accompanied by a delicious "punch" of cointreau, vin mousseaux, sugar and lemon juice.
Tried to make it myself later but it never was quite as good)
The second time I had dealings with sanglier it was alive!!
We were walking the col de Banyuls at the time.
It was ENORMOUS and really frightening.

Is that Super U in Prades? If so I'm off to get some. What's the price?
There are plenty of wild boar in NZ, but just like here you won't see them unless you go looking. I didn't know they were farmed commercially though.
One meat I had last year was Mouflon. That is very gamey and needs to be cooked for a long time. Pretty special though.

Santiago,
Super U Prades yes, the only U store in the 66 I believe 'cos they are mostly in the North, Brittany, etc. Aren't we lucky here? It's a great shop.
I would not guarantee your finding any Sanglier there at the moment, though, that was a while back and their gamme changes week by week.
Well worth a visit, though, and if you are up this way you could drop in to us for a coffee or whatever.

Yes it is. You can buy continental foods and food made by small specialist producers. They promote people who make organic goods and some of the food is lovely. You do of course pay for it but it gives an outlet for the cottage industries. I have just purchased some vinegars made by a family from down south. They experiment with natural ingredients most of which is grown on their farm.
