After reading Kate's latest adventures it reminded me about the caterpillars.
As some of you know we have been plagued by these creatures and have gone to a lot of trouble and expense to eradicate them. Fingers crossed I think we have been successful.
Anyway, to the point, I have been told that you can go to the Hotel de Ville (certainly in Le Boulou) and put your name on a list, then they will send out a truck with spraying equipment to zap these nasty creatures. They have to be able to drive near to the offending trees in order for them to reach.
This info was told to me by a neighbour so it is second hand news.

Chenille also have Mummy's and Daddies!!thumbelina wrote:I understand that the most effective way is to get someone to climb into the trees, take down the cocoons and burn them. !
"La processionnaire du pin" is a tradition where caterpillars, search for their young who were forcibly adopted by wealthy caterpillar families.
All they look for is some semblance of normality, living in a tree, and you want to burn their house, making them homeless!!!
Happy Christmas.

Yes well if they were harmless then I would leave well alone. I know chemicals are bad but the alternative is dead trees. These critters are very dangerous to humans and pets.
We have had no altenative but to remove and burn the nests we have been left with totem pole trees. Any woodcarvers out there?

In Spain I had sixteen trees, all of about 8 meters high, and I couldn't find anyone willing to climb up this high and cut down the branches.thumbelina wrote:I understand that the most effective way is to get someone to climb into the trees, take down the cocoons and burn them. Chemicals are all very well but - they're chemicals!
We sprayed all of the trees in our near neighborhood.
Argeles Plage has a lovely park, full of these trees. Nobody is scampering up the trees but the helicopter is sprayed from time to time. No problem!

There was an extensive thread on here last winter about these little beggars, which I can't find now, but see also this.
