Vernet les Bains
I have seen an ultra cheap studio of sale in Vernet which rather tempts me as a summer retreat from the heat of Béziers and the plain.
What are the main drawbacks of the town? I doubt I would be there much in the Summer

That's an interesting concept, you want to buy a summer retreat but doubt that you would be there much in the summer.groslard wrote:I have seen an ultra cheap studio of sale in Vernet which rather tempts me as a summer retreat from the heat of Béziers and the plain.

I am sure there is some logic in there somewhere

I think there are people here who live round there. For myself, I stay there for a few days a year, going to the Casals chamber music festival.groslard wrote:I have seen an ultra cheap studio of sale in Vernet which rather tempts me as a summer retreat from the heat of Béziers and the plain.

It’s a dozy, shabby, clapped-out former health spa. Just the sort of place I like. And there’s a surprisingly good Indian restaurant.

I like Vernet. I have some friends who moved there from further down the valley and love it as far as I know.
Here's a bit more about it. martyn has described it rather well, the shabby chic etc....and a great curry house as he says!

It’s mildly amusing that Vernet, along with anywhere else in Southern France, was originally a winter resort: it was nice to have a mild winter down south, but the summers were too bloody hot if you were dressed like a good Edwardian, and your lady wife certainly didn’t want a disfiguring sun-tan.Owens88 wrote:It is not too bad in Winter. My wife bought our place partly for the view and partly because the village still has life in February.
If you don’t believe me, check out when Rudyard Kipling stayed at Vernet. He was rich enough by then not to need to stay off-season.

Re: Vernet les Bains
Update.
It has got livelier.
The Indian restaurant has improved IMHO.
The Casino is a nice place for a Cocktail etc. without gambling. Nice ''club' atmosphere. Weird opening hours.
I will try the food at next visit.
