That's fair comment,but surely it's down to the restaurateur to adapt his wine list to suit the food/prices? It all reminds me of an Indian restaurant in Norwich,who serve some expensive Chateaneuf du Papes,Chablis,Pouillly Fuisses etc for people to wash down their Vindalloos with!

On reflection,to be honest I'm quite happy with the overall status quo . As Colin said,a lot of places earn very little markup on food,and pile it on the wine instead. I'd certainly not welcome a hike in food prices even if it resulted in a small reduction in wine fees. Speaking personally ,the food is of FAR greater importance,and there(particularly in these parts) are enough excellent wines(pichet and bottle) to choose from at moderate prices. There really is no need to spend 25-30€+ on wine with any meal imho.
