Taxes

Please can anyone give us a simplified rundown of the type and roundabout figures for the taxes we will have to pay each year when we move over? Not income tax but department and commune etc.

You've got two bills to look forward to each year: Taxe Foncieres and Tax d'Habitation.
The cost depends where you live and what sort of house it is.
You can probably expect to pay less than your council tax in England.
Just to give you a rough idea, we live in a 3 bed house - garage attached to next door on one side, detached on the other side - on a lotissement.
We have two bathrooms and a small pool.
Our two bills last year were around 600 and 700 euros (sorry, not sure which was which).
Hope that helps.

By the way, taxe d'habitation includes the audio-visual reception (TV) tax.
Both parts of the tax are partially income and age (old age!) indexed.
Taxe foncière is like rates and, here in France, the rentable value of
your property also pays a role in the calculation. Community charges for
rubbish collection are also included - and appear separately on the bill
because if you are letting the property, you bill the tennant for those charges.

As has been said before, the level of these local taxes depends very much on the area. eg you pay more in town centres/on the coast than you do in inland rural areas. Sometimes a LOT more.

Personally speaking,as a payer in St Cyprien, like many others I'm worried about a big hike to cover the extravagances of the late (not) lamented Dr Bouille.
