About the MGS

The Mediterranean Garden Society (MGS), a non-profit making association founded in Greece in 1994, acts as a forum for everyone who has a special interest in the plants and gardens of mediterranean* climate regions. The society publishes a quarterly journal The Mediterranean Garden and maintains a garden just outside Athens on a property belonging to the Goulandris Natural History Museum and generously placed at our disposal.

The aims of the MGS as set out in the Charter were deliberately drafted broadly to cover all possible directions that the society might wish to go in its life. As an international society, the MGS has members in countries throughout the world and in many of them members have formed branches so that they can meet for various activities.

*NB The word "Mediterranean" with a capital M is used to denote the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Basin, while the uncapitalized word "mediterranean" is used to describe the type of climate shared by these countries and other regions of the world.

Forthcoming Events

29 June - Jardin de Plantes Tinctoriales and Ferme de Gerbaud in the Luberon

Practical uses of Plants
This day out will look at the ways in which native Mediterranean plants can be put to good use. We shall go first to a garden built into a terraced hillside in the village of Lauris where 300 varieties of plants are cultivated for their use in the making of dyes. Lunch, either a picnic or in a café, will be in nearby Lourmarin, designated 'un des plus beaux villages de France'.
In the afternoon, Paula Marty will take us on a walk along tracks through her wooded estate to the fields of rosemary, lavender, savory, sage and thyme. Here she will explain many of the traditional and modern uses of Mediterranean herbs. An article, written by Melanie Dawe, on La Ferme de Gerbaud can be found on pages 28-30 of TMG No 53, July 2008.

9 September – Aramon, south of Avignon in the Gard

Visit to Château Le Plaisir
Château Le Plaisir was built in 1693 as a hunting lodge and 300 years later the new owner commissioned landscape architects Pascal Cribier and Lionel Guibert to create a garden on the 2-hectare site. We shall be able to visit spaces planted in a number of different styles, including a dry garden filled with plants from Olivier Filippi.

1 October - Château de Flaugergues, Montpellier

A Conference on Roses suitable for the Mediterranean Climate
This conference has been arranged in conjunction with Hortus and Praedium Rusticum, two local associations for garden lovers. In the morning we shall have a lecture in English by Michael Marriott, an expert from the British supplier, David Austin Roses, taking as a theme rose varieties suitable for our climate. After lunch there will be time to visit the gardens of the château, followed by a talk in French by Yan Surguet who is based in the Ariège, south of Toulouse, and is a specialist grower of botanical and traditional French roses. The talk will be followed by the opportunity for questions and discussion with both speakers.

6 October – St Siffret

Planting Day in Jocelyn’s Garden
Jocelyn has taken inspiration from the ideas put forward by members at the Design Day in February and with Hilary Ivey's help now has a plan for her new garden. Hard landscaping is well under way and the selection of plants has begun. Volunteers are now needed to help put the plants in the ground in a 'hands on' gardening day.
