2 Garalart – Eclectic selection 2

A new, surprisingly diverse gallery has opened in Céret. Its name is a contraction of Gare A L’Art, as it’s in an old industrial building 150 metres west of the former railway station.

Garalart features works for sale by seven artists of the Vallespir, the valley of the Tech River that extends westward from its mouth at St. Jean. The works include pottery, crystal, furnishings, jewellery, apparel, shoes, paintings and sculpture. The genre varies, reflecting local roots: the vigatanes court shoes with ankle laces are made from rope soles and sailcloth uppers manufactured since 1860 in the PO, and a variety of garments are made from colourful sailcloth and from mohair from local goats. Flair pervades: the feet of chair and table legs are shaped like human feet, wearing shoes.

Garalart occasionally hosts exhibitions by other artists and theme evenings of poetry and music. Open since last September 6th, its official opening is at 6 pm on Saturday, 6 December.
