James Hogan – Creativity triggered

3 With MM Brady 3

Having tired of words, the writer deliberately escapes to a place where he isn’t fluent in the language. Initially, he feels like a hermit going to the desert, but after the forty days he decides to stay. Then, through politesse and the language of human kindness, he regains his faith in words and begins writing about where he came from and about the people and cats of the place where he ended up.
So describes James Hogan his escape ten years ago, from being a high-profile medical scientist in London to more fully pursuing his first love of poetry, prose, translation and playwriting in the Pyrénées-Orientales. It was, he explains, a transformation: “the PO brought me back to my childhood for a second time, to learning how to speak, listen and live.”

Local characters wander through its pages, and the first of its five “Books” builds on the deeds of the Genêt d’Or, the guardian of the vineyards of the Roussillon and thereby the name of an annual poetry contest under the auspices of a literary association founded in 1921 in Perpignan.
