Be alarmed, be very alarmed!

3 Smoke alarms become obligatory in France 3

Whilst more than 85% of homes in Britian now have smoke alarms installed, the trend hasn’t yet filtered through to France where it seems that less than 3% of homes have alarms. In December 2009, the installation of smoke detectors over the next five years was made obligatory, and the French government has asked trading standards agents to carry out tests, as many of the smoke alarms available on the French market at the moment either failed to detect a fire, did not do so quickly enough, or were too quiet to attract attention.
Of course, any new law is only as good as its enforcing, which would be very difficult, so it is likely that insurance companies will be asked to make smoke alarms a condition of their home insurance policies, to put pressure on householders to buy and maintain detectors.
