P r o u d t o b e D r a g o n s ! With a splash of Mediterranean colour and more than a little Catalan spirit, the Dragons of Perpignan are a formidable addition to the toughest Rugby League competition in the Northern Hemisphere.
Since joining the 14-team Super League in 2006, the Dragons’ growing success has lead to their stadium, Gilbert Brutus, being modernised and extended, with new offices, changing rooms, etc, and, more importantly, new stands to cater for up to 14,000 spectators. The rugby (and the weather, no doubt!) regularly brings flocks of British supporters from rugby-mad Warrington, Leeds, Hull and St. Helens. The Dragons themselves also have a fiercely loyal following: a drum-banging, horn-hooting sang et or (blood and gold) army. In true Catalan spirit, referees and opposition players often feel the brunt of their wrath but within the stands, fans mingle and mix in an almost carnival atmosphere.
The season runs from February to early October, with 13 home and 13 away games, plus a game in the “Magic Weekend” which starts the season, as well as a knockout competition. All away games are in Great Britain, which means the Perpignan team has a gruelling travel schedule. The “local derby” for our boys is against the Harlequins of London! Only New Zealand teams who play in the mainly Australian National Rugby League are faced with a comparable challenge.
Go along and watch a game – you won’t be disappointed!
