CIRCLES ON CATALAN ROADS

If you’ve driven through Catalonia lately, you might have seen weird white circles painted on bends.

Nope, not pretty graffitti — they’re part of a new safety experiment to protect motorbikes and their riders. Smart, simple, life-saving.

The idea originally came from Austria. By instinctively swerving to avoid the circles, bikers take a safer line through sharp curves, keeping them away from the centre line (and oncoming cars).

Similar markings already work in Germany and Slovenia, so Catalonia’s giving it a try.

Why? Because motorbikes make up over 30% of road deaths here.

If it proves effective, expect to see more of these curious circles on twisty mountain roads.
