Will you soon be applying for residency or residency renewal?

In a move aimed at “strengthening cultural integration,” French authorities have announced that foreign residents may soon be required to pass a basic cheese knowledge test when renewing their residency permits.

The proposed measure, currently under review by the Ministry of the Interior, would apply to non-French nationals living in France for more than one year.

According to early details, the test would include three components:

🧀 Identification: Candidates must correctly identify at least five cheeses in a blind tasting

🗣️ Pronunciation: Applicants will be asked to pronounce regional cheeses such as Reblochon, Saint-Nectaire, and Crottin de Chavignol

🔪 Etiquette: A practical assessment on how to properly cut and serve cheese “without compromising its structural integrity”

A ministry spokesperson explained:

“Cheese is not simply food in France — it is a cultural language. Integration requires more than paperwork.”

Those who fail the test would not be denied residency outright but would be required to attend a compulsory “Stage de Fromage” (Cheese Integration Workshop), typically held over a weekend.

Local prefectures are expected to pilot the scheme later this year, with a possible nationwide rollout in early 2027.

More details — including whether wine pairing will be included in the exam — are expected in the coming months
