Torreilles animal sanctuary appeals for urgent help
Flood damage, animals rescued from the Trévillach fires and a continuing rise in abandonments have left a much-loved local animal sanctuary struggling to cope.
Ânes et Compagnie 66, based in Torreilles, is appealing for donations and practical help as food, veterinary and repair bills continue to mount.
More than 750 animals now depend on the sanctuary
According to a recent report in L’Indépendant, the sanctuary is now caring for 757 animals.
Around 30 arrived following the devastating Trévillach wildfire. They included goats, donkeys, sheep and llamas, some suffering from smoke inhalation or injuries sustained while trying to escape the flames. The fire also destroyed or damaged some of the places in which the animals had previously been sheltered.
For Ânes et Compagnie 66, this emergency came on top of an already extremely difficult year.
Heavy rain and flooding at the beginning of 2026 caused serious damage at the sanctuary. Hay intended for the animals was ruined, equipment was lost and, tragically, some animals did not survive.
At the same time, the number of abandoned animals continues to rise.
Founded by Jean-Noël Saniol, Ânes et Compagnie 66 takes in abandoned, mistreated, injured and stray animals. Its residents include horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, llamas, poultry and many other animals needing safety and care.
Every new arrival means additional food, bedding, shelter and veterinary treatment. With hundreds of mouths to feed every day, even apparently modest expenses soon add up.
The sanctuary now needs both financial support and more volunteers.

A small donation can make a real difference
This sanctuary has opened its doors repeatedly to animals that had nowhere else to go. After floods, fire damage and an ever-growing number of abandonments, it is now the sanctuary itself that needs rescuing.
If you can spare a few euros, offer a few hours of your time or simply share this appeal, you will be helping more than 750 animals receive the food, shelter and care they need.
