Cap Fauve, Aude Jonquères d’Oriola ….

In a homage to Matisse and Derain, Aude Jonquères d’Oriola presents Cap Fauve in the Chateau of Collioure.

Many of her paintings are inspired by the work of the artistic duo of 120 years ago: a bowl of goldfish, a  wooded passage and the myriad moods of the sea and sky.

Yellow grass, red trees and  pink sky, the  grey hulk  of the chateau, the white of the Canigou, the green of the Albères, great washes of ultramarine blue and turquoise – colour  overwhelms subject.

Among the bold horizontal  masses of colour, two works stand out. Burlats Catalanes depicts  a handful of cherries,  sparkling with light, bouncing with life, about to roll off an angled table and drop into your hand. As in the poster painting  of slanted roofs seen from above, this changed point of view is  unexpected and  refreshing, drawing us into the drama.  

Far from the exuberant colours of  her landscapes is the artist’s mutedportrait of a woman with mantilla (reminiscent of  Picabia’s painting of the same subject in the current exhibition in Céret). The charcoal drawings by Jonquères d’Oriola celebrate local Catalan traditions: la fête d’anchois, sardines and  the sardane where sense and sensibility  dance hand in hand.
