WHO TO CONTACT IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Hopefully you will never need any of these numbers, but it is worth keeping them somewhere handy.

Here is a useful list of emergency numbers in France, together with some important contacts for people living in or visiting the Pyrénées-Orientales.

IMPORTANT: THE MAIN EMERGENCY NUMBERS

For a genuine emergency, use one of the following numbers:

The 112 number works throughout the European Union and can be called from a mobile or landline. Operators can communicate in French or English.

If you are unsure which emergency service you need, 112 is a good number to remember. (⁠Service Public)

114 – Emergency service for people who cannot use the telephone normally

The 114 service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by SMS and through other communication methods for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind or unable to speak.

It can also be used if you are in a situation where you cannot safely speak aloud. (⁠⁠Service Public)

Important

For a serious medical emergency, accident, fire or crime requiring immediate intervention, do not waste time looking for a local telephone number – call 15, 17, 18 or 112.

MEDICAL HELP

Out-of-hours doctor

116 117

This is the national number for finding medical care outside normal surgery hours. It is not intended for life-threatening emergencies. For those, call 15 or 112.

SAMU

For serious illness, major injury, medical emergency or when someone needs urgent medical attention.

Pharmacies

For information about a pharmacie de garde, ask your local pharmacy or use the official pharmacy information service. In an emergency, a pharmacist, doctor or the police can also advise you.

SOS Médecins

SOS Médecins continues to provide medical consultations in the Perpignan area, but local arrangements and telephone services can change. For out-of-hours medical advice, 116 117 is the number we recommend using rather than relying on an old local telephone number.

Emergency veterinary help

If your pet is seriously ill or injured, telephone your usual veterinary practice first. Many practices provide an out-of-hours service or redirect you to the appropriate emergency clinic.

UTILITIES AND EMERGENCY REPAIRS

If you smell gas, do not create a flame or operate electrical switches. Move outside and call for help. ⁠(Perpignan)

Water

Water services are managed by different local authorities and operators around the Pyrénées-Orientales, so there is no single number covering the entire department.

If you have a serious water leak, check your water bill or local commune website for the emergency number for your area.

If you have a serious dispute with a hotel, restaurant, retailer or other business, you can contact the Direction Départementale de la Protection des Populations (DDPP) in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
