Meg Wolitzer: from Book to Film
Internationally-renowned author, Meg Wolitzer, will share her passion and inspirations during an English-language presentation of how her 2003 novel, The Wife, was transposed to film.
Hosted by L’Association des Amis du Cinéma à Collioure and Come to Your Senses Writing Retreats, this exciting event will take place at the Médiathèque de Collioure on Thursday 26th September at 5pm.
About the author
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Meg Wolitzer is a New York Times bestselling author and has published 15 novels since starting her career in 1982.
She has co-authored a cryptic crossword anthology and also written about the difficulty women face in getting critical literary acclaim.
Meg has been invited to speak and teach at the University of Iowa, Princeton University and a wide range of writers’ conferences and workshops… and now she’s coming to Collioure to talk about her work, and The Wife.

About the book
Joe and Joan Castleman are on an aeroplane, 35,000 feet above the ocean. Joe is thinking about the prestigious literary prize he is about to receive and Joan is plotting how to leave him. For too long Joan has played the role of supportive wife, turning a blind eye to his misdemeanours, subjugating her own talents and quietly being the keystone of his success.
The Wife is an acerbic and astonishing take on a marriage from its public face to the private world behind closed doors. It masterfully creates an exposé of lives lived in partnership and the truth that behind the compromises, dedication and promise inherent in marriage there so often lies a secret…
About the film
Director, Björn Runge, driven by a powerful desire to describe the frightening and fleeting process of submission through love, offers us here an intellectual description full of elegance and sensitivity.
Literary imposture has already inspired many films but The Wife stands out from the crowd thanks to the dazzling performances of its actors: Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater and above all Glenn Close, whose performance gained her the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes in 2019.
About the event
Join Meg for an intimate conversation that will cover her life, her vision and of course, the journey of The Wife from novel to screen. There will then be a discussion, where you can ask this incredible author all of your questions, followed by book signings.
The event will be in English, with a French summary provided. Entry is free of charge. Space is limited to 50 so be sure to arrive early!
