Your Restaurant Reviews

These are hard times to own and run a restaurant…and long hours, day in day out, particularly for those run by couples who get little spare time off, to spend with their children and each other. The following restaurants support this magazine and help us to stay free. Please support them when you can. Bon app!

restaurant reviews

We love publishing your reviews. They’re honest (we hope!) objective, (surely?) unrelated to advertising (bien sûr!) and cover a wide range of tastes, prices, and places. You might not always agree, the chef might be having a bad day, your standards might be higher… or lower – but they give you an idea of what’s available.

SPOTLIGHT ON PERPIGNAN

LE COMPTOIR DE MAMIE BIGOUDE… with Leigh and Merry

With quirky 1950’s kitsch decorations this crêperie keeps you entertained just looking around at the interesting decor. There is a tasty selection of savoury galettes and sweet crepes. We found it an ideal dining solution for a place to eat in central Perpignan before going to a concert, also close to the cinema.

BAGELSTEIN…With Erika

Newish place along the river in Perpignan centre. Went for the first time and loved it. I did not actually have a bagel but their chocolate cookie was dripping with chocolate and melting on the tongue. Need to get back there to try more of their mouthwatering offerings.

DOUBLE WHAMMY: CAFÉ VIENNE & CHEZ NOI…. with Nance Li

Café Vienne is always a good choice. They have very nice vegetables for vegetarians like me, and their traditional French food attracts many loyal clients.
Chez Noi is fantastic if you like real Chinese food. It is my canteen! I have brought many friends there, everyone is happy. Very reasonable price.

Just tried this African restaurant. Delicious homemade food. Generous portions. Friendly owners.  Big advantage is that it’s open all day long. Take away too. Bon appétit.

LE 17… with Lesley Anne

Sublime lunch today – it’s all about fish at lunchtime with a unique menu but it was well well worth 30 Euros for the 3 courses. Fantastic. Booking is essential. Just next to the Cathedral in Perpignan.

LE CISTELL DE CALMEILLES… with Gillian

A little off the beaten track but wonderful food. Charles the chef, is of gourmet standard with a set 3 course menu every day. It is around 37 E for 3 courses. Totally unexpected in such a small village. Would recommend you give it a try. Very small so you need to book in advance.

LE BOUT DU MONDE, Vernet les Bains… with Leigh and Merry

On the way back from Port Bou, we stopped off at the beach with the underwater snorkel trail for lunch. Their Winter menu of three courses for 22€ had two choices for entrée and plat, then dessert or cheese. All home made and great quality. The salmon terrine was as good as a top class restaurant. I had the duck with maple syrup and cheesy mash, while Leigh had the fish, merlu (hake) in a spicy curry sauce. Delicious! Pudding was a salted caramel profiterole. We sat outside overlooking the bay, a lovely spot, and a great place to pause if you are driving along the coast road between Banyuls-sur-Mer and Cerebere. Turn off at the roundabout and wiggle down to the beach, following the signs to the snorkel trail.

ISTINTO, Thuir… with Kev

Been here several times recently & can really recommend. The cuisine is Sicilian/Italian, the chef being from Tuscany & the Sicilian wines are terrific! As it’s a small operation, the service is personal, friendly & spot-on. Prices are very good, approx 25 euros per head with booze. The Sicilian sculptures of busts adds a real flavour to the place. Love it.

LE JARDIN DE JASMIN, Vernet les Bains… with Leigh and Merry

We have often been told about there being a great place to have a curry, so most of you probably already know about Le Jardin de Jasmin. It was a super lunch with all the side dishes, crispy poppadoms, samosas and dips. You can choose how spicy you want your curry and it was all delicious with all the special spices. Plenty of veggie options. We ordered more than we could manage and they kindly packed it up for us to take home. One of our party was not a curry person and enjoyed the fish and chips. Vernet les Bains is a pretty drive so you can combine some walks and sightseeing with a lovely lunch.
