Silence at Galerie Castang
with Ellen Turner Hall
Silence, the current exhibition at the Galerie Castang in Perpignan, combines the painting of Patrick Loste and the sculpture of Pierre Riba. The works of both artists invite a moment of quiet contemplation.

Patrick Loste’s large unframed canvases resemble ancient cave painting, enveloped by darkness, difficult to discern. As your eyes adjust, what first appear as shadowy shapes, indistinct and undefined, reveal themselves as familiar forms: trees, mountains, clouds, horses and the rare human dwarfed in the immensity of nature.
Conflict seems to be the default state of his human subjects: Adam and Eve eying each other across the apple tree, a mermaid submerging her hapless mate, a woman wrestling a man to the ground and Saint George and the dragon struggling against the confines of the canvas.
Pierre Riba’s precisely-cut carton constructions propose a world of simple forms in infinite variations . His mostly abstract sculptures in black and white, are inspired by mythology and a range of cultures from African masks to Japanese origami.
L’Idole stands aloof like a sacred relic, while La Paloma plunges through space. Perhaps his most haunting work is a mask with two slits for the eyes but otherwise impenetrable, like the visor of a medieval knight.
M. Castang the gallery owner and personal friend of both artists, is an eloquent champion of their works.
