Romer Kitching at Can Iaio, Toulouges

with Ellen Turner Hall

Roussillon has its very own portraitist! Romer Kitching  has established himself as one of the most talented contemporary painters in Roussillon.

At the Galerie/Atelier  Can Iaio Romer presents 40 paintings, Voyage: Le Roussillon  Revisité.

Originally from London, Romer discovered Roussillon during childhood holidays  spent in the region.   Four years at the Florence academy for painting imbued Romer with a respect for  traditional materials and  a depth of technique.  His portraits of people  reflect the play of light and shade of a  renaissance master.  Ever since moving  to Céret  in 2018, Romer’s reputation  as both painter and teacher has grown.

Including views of Céret, Perpignan, le Canigou and the Côte Vermeille, the voyage starts with a self-portrait of the artist at Collioure railway station. Along the way Romer explores landscapes like  mimosas with Céret in the background, cityscapes like the  left bank of Perpignan and interiors like the Templiers’ bar. Just as the poster for the exhibition is inspired by a Maillol sculpture,   so is Romer’s haunting painting of a  female nude on a black background “La Nuit”.
