REVIEWED IN SPRING 2016 BY MERRY
Last year we were more than a little worried when our favourite restaurant, la Salamandre in Sorède, changed hands. After a couple of wonderful meals there our fears have now vanished, and it is as wonderful as ever in the capable hands of Dim and Hélène.
The decor has been updated in a tasteful modern style, and they have made it their own with beautifully presented, delicious dishes and an extended local wine list. The cuisine has modern “Masterchef” touches without being overly fussy.
After a lovely amuse-bouche of fois gras, we went for fishy starters, trying the scallops with leeks and a lovely lightly seared salmon slice. We followed this with a perfectly cooked beef fillet in a mouthwatering jus, and the catch of the day, Dorade from Argelès. This came with pearls of banyuls vinegar which burst in your mouth in an explosion of flavour. Both dishes came with multi-coloured carrots and the welcome green of brocoli, so often missing from main courses.
The desserts were not to be missed. A tiramisu with a twist of salted caramel and a chocolate millefeuille. Great value at €30 for 3 courses (supplements for some dishes) from a talented chef.
