From 1 November 2026, online purchases dispatched from the UK or another country outside the EU are subject to a new €2 handling fee for each category of goods in the parcel.

For parcels worth no more than €150, this is added to the €3 customs charge introduced in July€3 customs charge introduced in July. A parcel containing one type of item can therefore attract €5 in charges; two different categories can attract €10. VAT and any carrier’s fees may also apply.

This is particularly relevant to British residents in France who buy from UK websites. What matters is where the goods are dispatched from, not where the website or company is based.

The seller, platform or carrier is responsible for the charges, but they may include them in the purchase price or request payment before delivery. Private, non-commercial gifts sent between individuals are not covered by these two charges.

Before ordering, check the dispatch country and whether import charges are included. French customs warns that it does not contact private individuals directly asking for these payments, so be cautious of texts or emails claiming to demand customs fees.
