Back to Perpignan: a gateway to freedom (and butter on your bottom!)

Canet Plage, 1939-1042
  1. What an interesting article! But where is the memorial stone ( stèle) commemorating these events in Canet?
I know of many “évadés” ( escapees) that passed over the Pyrenees , my father in law was one of them, they were often arrested by the Spanish and imprisoned in terrible conditions before being released by the Americans in exchange for flour, grain etc then they went down to Gibraltar and crossed over into Algeria to join the Free French troups.
