The ‘populaire’ Place Rigaud in Perpignan is a multi-cultural, working class square full of comings and goings. It is also now home to an organic, vegan restaurant, inspired by the revolutionary Mexican artist, Frida Khalo.
We’ve eaten there twice now, and both times were an absolute delight. The menu is full of ingredients and flavours from across the world and chef Jean-Claude takes the time to explain your options, which change regularly according to the seasons!
On our last visit, we shared a selection of starters, including humus, shalima and maghreb cigars (like Asian spring rolls, but stuffed with a mouthwatering concoction of veg and North African spices). I then moved onto a colourful vegetable patras (Indian curry), while my partner devoured a seaweed and vegetable lasagne. For desert, we tested the buza, coconut milk and dried fruits, and the devilishly-good chocolate truffles!
For 3 plentiful courses and a drink (wine, beer or soft drink), we paid 28€ per person. Considering everything is organic (where possible), fresh and homemade with love, in my opinion it was worth every penny. As a vegetarian, you may well think I’m biased, so don’t take my word for it, take my partner’s word for it- he’s as French and as carnivore as they come!

I recently ate at Frida’s with my Yoga group and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Delicious, home-made food in a relaxed atmosphere as if we were eating in Frida’s very own dining room. Personal and very friendly service from Jean-Claude and Ignacio. Jean-Claude speaks English, but is happy for you to try out your French!
Frida’s Recipe of the month Polenta Fries “Frites de Polenta”, or polenta fries, are very easy to prepare. Not only will they seduce the taste buds but they serve as a nourishing alternative to the regular chip!
Here’s how we do it at Frida’s : In a large pan, heat virgin olive oil over a gentle heat and fry a selection of coulourful, organic vegetables (for example, onion, red pepper, courgette, and carrot) Add 75cl water and season with salt and pepper When the water begins to boil, gently add 250g organic polenta, stirring continuously to avoid lumps Reduce the heat to avoid spitting When the mixture has thickened and all the water has been absorbed, remove from the heat Place into a oiled, flat mould and flatten with a rolling pin Leave to cool Cut the “frites” to desired thickness and reheat in a lightly oiled frying pan until crisp © www.tastemade.com Bon appétit ! A très bientôt, Frida’s
