Français, la belle langue, can be a devil to master with all those irregular verbs, silent letters and the dreaded masculine/feminine!

French grammar

If it’s all Greek to you, try your hand at the following exercises and see if you can’t impress your neighbours at the next apéro!

Tongue twister (Virelangue)

Repeat quickly three times!

Match up the words, all beginning with A with their definitions. (Why not try to work them out first just from the definitions?)

Language tip

Penser à / penser de – both mean ‘to think of/about’ but with slightly different meanings…

– penser à

to consider, to have in mind

Eg/ Je pense à ma mère – I’m thinking about my mother

Je pense à ce que je dois faire demain – I’m thinking about what I need to do tomorrow.

– penser de

to have an opinion about (often used in a question)

Eg/ Qu’est-ce que tu penses de mes cheveux? – What do you think of my hair?

Que penses-tu de ce beau temps? – What do you think of this beautiful weather?

Interesting quote

Ils nous ont fait chier pour rentrer, maintenant ils nous font chier pour sortir: les Anglais, les chats de l’Europe

The following expressions all use the verb ‘vivre’ to live (past participle veçu) Can you find their English equivalents?

Language tip

Je veux que tu/vous + subjunctive

I want you to…

Ooops! If you want to use this construction, you can’t really avoid the subjunctive… but don’t panic! You don’t really need to understand why. Just learn these common verbs by heart and you’re well on your way!

…fasses (do)

…prennes  (take) 

…sois (be) 

…aies (have) – pronounced ay (as in hay)

…ailles (go) – pronounced eye
