Homage to Lluís Companys

Le Boulou pays homage to Catalan hero, Lluís Companys

Biography: Lluís Companys (21st June 1882 – 15th October 1940)

  • 1st President of the Parliament of Catalonia (1932-1933)
  • 2nd President of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1933-1940)
  • Staunch supporter of freedom of speech/press
  • Fought against Fascism
  • Exiled after Spanish Civil War
  • Captured by the Nazi Gestapo and handed over to Franco
  • Executed by firing squad in 1940

Representing freedom, justice and equality, Companys is a symbol of hope for Catalonia, and the rest of the world, in these turbulent times.

Madame le Maire of le Boulou, Nicole Villard, invites Catalans, by birth or by adoption, to join her in celebration of the life of Lluís Companys.

4pm Hôtel de ville Conference: Lluís Companys, an Assasinated President (in French & Catalan)

An exhibition on the life and death of Lluís Companys is already open at the Maison de l’Histoire and will run until Wednesday 21st February, when the exhibition will close with a presentation/debate.
