In 1947, the Comité National des Sentiers de Grande Randonnée (CNSGR) was created by the Touring-Club de France, later to become, in 1978, la Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre

Originally set up by the Rois de Majorque as a defence system to protect the Roussillon from invaders, the tours de signaux (signal towers) allowed information to be passed quickly around the region, using fire and smoke signals.

The Via Domitia was the first of the vast network of roads in Gaul (France) built by the Romans, crossing southern France to link Italy and Spain.
