CSF NEWSLETTER: AUGUST 2023

Hello Everyone
The blistering heat has driven us indoors. As some take their early afternoon nap laid out like fairy queens on their sofas, others are stretched out on the beach, worshipping that great ball of fire in the sky. Some are like slices of white bread waiting to be toasted!
Rivers have run dry, their exposed mud cracked and begging for rain. Helicopters circle the sky and fire engine sirens whine like scalded cats.
One of our pine forests caught fire a few weeks back. The wood looks eerie now, naked without anything green or bushy, the tall pine trees looking like burnt out telegraph poles, still with their branches and rusty brown pine needles.
Undaunted by the heat, the ants run around, up and down trees and in and out of the crevices in the patio. They look bigger this year and are quite capable of carting off a stray potato crisp or a seed pod four times their size. We had an unwelcome visit from a bunch of hornets – they stripped the bark from our almond tree and would have continued to wreak havoc had it not been for a hasty squirt of something evil – sorry all you conservationists but these insects are not at all friendly.
CSF Charity Art Auction
Last October we had an auction of artwork by local artist Bridget Rook-Waterhouse. She has very generously donated them to CSF. There were four items unsold and if you are interested, you can view the remaining artworks and get details of how to donate here.
Call for tombola and raffle prizes
We would be very grateful indeed for anything you might have which you think worthy of a Tombola or Raffle prize. Bottles of wine or spirits, unopened presents, anything in good condition really: paintings, ornaments, china or glass, scarves, handkerchiefs, fancy bedlinen.
If you would like to bring them along to any of our Drop Ins or events, we’d be very grateful to have them for our Walk for Life in September and our Autumn Ball in October. Or you can email me and I’ll arrange collection.
Thank you.
English greeting cards
Come along to any of our events or Drop Ins and you’ll see that we are selling really good quality English cards. We have single cards for lots of different occasions and boxes of beautifully designed note cards.
These have been donated by our friend Shirley Morton who some of you may know.
The prices range from 2€ to 5€ and, of course, we are always happy to accept a donation.

Looking ahead
Thursday 7th September, Walk for Life, Maureillas
Our Walk for Life will be at Prat De La Farga again this year. It’s a fun day for all ages! We walk in the morning and then enjoy a picnic lunch together.
We start the day with two walks to choose from. The long walk will be 9kms and the short walk will be around 4.5kms along mainly flat lanes.
There will be a game of pétanque, various stalls, a Tombola and the musical ambiance will be provided by Double D Blues who will be entertaining us during our picnics with their interpretation of blues and folk.
For more information please contact Penny.
Saturday 7th October, Autumn Ball, Bages, 7pm – Midnight
The price of a ticket is €20. Please bring your friends and make a night of it. We can reserve a table for up to 10 people.
You must purchase your ticket before the evening of the Ball and you can do this at any one of our events or Drop Ins or just email me. Tickets will be on sale from August onwards.
PLEASE DO COME – is there a better way to celebrate the beginning of Autumn !!

Our Information Meeting will be held in the Aude in the Maison de la Prévention Santé in Narbonne. It is a morning only event, starting with coffee at 9.30 and ending around 12. This is a meeting where we tell members what we do and to encourage new people to join. In the past we have extended this meeting to include an introduction to the Active Listening role – on this occasion we will simply talk generally about this role.
If you would like to attend this meeting, please let Sue Ackloo know by Friday 6 October. Her email address is sud-treasurer@cancersupportfrance.org
Please remember that if anyone is struggling or needing help, the CSF telephone and email helplines are always open. We are there for everyone needing assistance at this time as well as for those affected by cancer. There is also lots of information on our website. |
