European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new electronic travel authorization required for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area countries.

  • Who needs it? Citizens of countries that currently don’t need a visa to enter the EU/Schengen zone.

  • When? Expected to become mandatory in 2025.

  • How? Travelers must apply online before their trip.

  • Cost: About €7, valid for 3 years (or until passport expiry).

  • Purpose: Security check to strengthen EU borders, similar to the U.S. ESTA system.

👉 Without ETIAS approval, visa-free travelers won’t be allowed to board flights or enter Schengen countries.

British citizens (UK passport holders)

Since Brexit, the UK is no longer part of the EU.
UK citizens will need an ETIAS to travel short-term (up to 90 days) in the Schengen Area once ETIAS goes live in 2025.
Irish citizens (Ireland passport holders): Ireland is an EU member state but not part of Schengen. Irish citizens DO NOT need ETIAS to travel in the EU or Schengen Zone — they retain full EU freedom of movement.
In short:
•UK → ETIAS required
•Ireland → No ETIAS required

•Must be valid for at least 3 months after your intended departure from the Schengen Area.
