After only a couple of trips, this project has been shelved by the mairie of Port Vendres, due to lack of funding on the North Catalonia side.

Port-Vendres to L’Escala by sea

New tourism initiative “On the route of the Greeks and Romans” was officially launched on April 7 with the signing of an agreement linking the towns of Port-Vendres and L’Escala.

Two thousand years ago, Greek and Roman merchants made regular trips between Port-Vendres and Empurias. The two ports were considered essential stopping off points for sea trade between Marseilles and Carthage (North Africa), one of the busiest lines at the time.

Today, tourist offices in Port-Vendres and L’Escala have joined with the Mare Nostrum agency, specializing in shipping, to resurrect the sea route between the two towns and turn it into an innovative tourism circuit.

Every Saturday morning, from June 15th to September 15th, Mare Nostrum will carry up to 200 passengers from Port-Vendres to L’Escala. A coach will bring passengers back to Port Vendres in the late afternoon, included in the price of the boat trip. There will also be a boat setting out from La Escala to Port Vendres but not at a suitable time to allow a return journey.

Each trip will last two hours, during which there will be an explanation of the history and culture associated with that part of the coast.
