In the past, the young men of the mountain villages of the Pyrénées would attempt to capture a bear at this time of year, in order to prove their bravery!
During February, two events traditionally take place at Prats, delighting all who attend, and causing visitors to return year after year: la fête de l’ours (the day of the bear) and ‘Carnaval’.
Following ancient traditions, the bear festival of Arles sur Tech is acted out as a living theatre piece involving the public.
The Saint -Laurent bearfest is based around age old traditions.
On either side of the winding road, signposts suggest Corsavy, Montferrer, Saint Laurent de Cerdans and Coustouges, pretty villages well worth a visit another time. Today however, we are heading towards the end of the line, the unspoilt fortified medieval town of Prats de Mollo, dominated by Fort Lagarde, designed by Vauban in 1680.
