🇫🇷 End-of-Year Admin Tasks in France — Simple Guide for residents & second-home owners.
🗓️ Why is the end of the year important in France?
The end of the year (October–December) is when many tax bills are due, updates must be made, and paperwork should be checked for the coming year so it’s a good time to make sure your finances, home, and official records are in order.
🏡 Property and Housing
Do I need to pay any housing taxes?
Yes — there are two main local taxes:
Tax | Applies to | Due |
|---|---|---|
All property owners | September–October | |
Taxe d’habitation (second homes only) | Owners of second homes (not main homes) | October–December |
👉 If you own a second home in France (even as a foreigner), make sure your taxe d’habitation is paid before the deadline shown on your tax notice (avis de taxe d’habitation). FIND OUT MORE
Should I update anything with the tax office?
Yes. If your situation has changed — for example:
You sold or bought property,
You moved house, or
You started renting out your home —
then you must declare this on your impots.gouv.fr account.
Use the section called “Gérer mes biens immobiliers”.
💰 Taxes and Finances
When should I check my tax account?
Before the year ends, log in to impots.gouv.fr and check:
Your income tax (impôt sur le revenu) payments are up to date.
Any refunds or top-ups have been handled.
Your bank details are correct for future payments or refunds.
What about automatic tax payments?
If you pay by monthly instalments (prélèvement mensuel), check that:
Your monthly payments match your latest income.
You’ve updated your bank details if you changed accounts.
You can adjust or pause payments directly online if needed.
🚗 Vehicle Administration
Anything to do for my car?
If you own a car registered in France:
Check your insurance renewal date.
Make sure your Contrôle Technique (MOT) is still valid (required every 2 years).
If you’ve moved, update your car registration address on ants.gouv.fr.
💳 Health and Social Matters
Do I need to renew my Carte Vitale or EHIC card?
If you’re living in France full-time, make sure your Carte Vitale details (address, photo, bank info) are up to date.
If you visit France part-time, check your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) expiry date.
What about my mutuelle (top-up health insurance)?
Review your mutuelle at the end of the year. You can:
Change or cancel it after one year (thanks to the loi Hamon).
Compare new offers to make sure you’re not overpaying.

📄 Banking and Bills
What should I check with my bank?
Before year-end:
Verify your automatic payments (EDF, water, internet, etc.).
Make sure your French bank account stays active (some banks close unused accounts).
Download or print annual statements for your records.
Should I review my energy or phone contracts?
Yes! Compare your electricity, gas, and mobile/internet plans. Many French suppliers let you switch easily to cheaper tariffs — often saving €100+ a year.
📨 Mail and Contact Information
I live abroad part of the year — what should I do?
If you’re not in France all year:
Make sure your local tax office and bank have your current address and email.
Consider setting up online access to all accounts (tax, utilities, insurance).
If needed, set up mail forwarding (réexpédition de courrier) with La Poste.
