by Marc Anfossi

Marc Anfossi , Parisian writer, wrote this poem about the River Tech  when he came to take the waters in Amélie-les-Bains in January 1912.

One of three main rivers in the Pyrenees-Orientales,  the Tech starts over the border in Spain, flows through 25 different towns including passing under the Pont du Diable in Céret, and ends in the sea between Saint-Cyprien and Argelès-sur-Mer.

LE TECH

Tantôt c’est un serpent bleuâtre

Glissant sur les galets polis ;

Tantôt c’est un ruisseau folâtre

Dont on entend le gazouillis,

Par instants, il gronde, il moutonne,

Emportant arbres et maisons,

Flooding of the River Tech © Mairie Arles sur Tech

Pareil à l’ouragan qui tonne

Il dévaste les floraisons.

Puis, reprenant son cours tranquille

De bon Tech, placide cours d’eau,

Il laisse à découvert quelque île

Où revient becqueter l’oiseau.

Le Tech ressemble à l’âme humaine

Qui parfois, distillant la haine,

Engloutit l’Amour et l’Espoir,

pont du diable ceret

Et qui, dans les larmes calmée,

Se trouve conquise et charmée

Par les douces chansons du soir.
